Sonya Stefan is a media artist who uses glitchy electronics, Hi-8 video, and 16mm film to create multimedia performances. Her work often transforms the damaged and discarded – from broken mixers and cracked LCD screens to a collection of found, disintegrating films – into contemporary media works. Many of her projects are collaborative and involve pillaging garbage bags full of abandoned 35mm film which she freely distributes to other local artists to work with.
Although best known in the last century for his rule-breaking street photography — he’s been called “the poet of the epoch of McCarthy and the Bomb” (Max Kozloff) — William Klein became a prophet of this century through his filmmaking. Klein’s iconoclastic fiction films and expressionist documentaries had transported “the apocalyptic dreams and demagogic humours of the 1950s into the [mediascape] of the three subsequent decades” (Jonathan Rosenbaum). Who better, then, to usher in the millennium?
Eternal Boy Playground is a show of new experimental media by Anxious to Make – the artist collective, comprised of Liat Berdugo and Emily Martinez – that playfully explores the cultural tropes surrounding crypto-currencies, like Bitcoin. Focusing, specifically, on the migration of Bitcoin “miners” to Puerto-Rico, following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2016, the show examines the utopian ideal of the “crypto-paradise” that these self-proclaimed “Puertopians” aim to realize.

In October 2014, Light Cone initiated artist resideies dedicated to video-based post-production of films that fall within the realm of experimental cinema, with the objective of supporting approximately 10 projects per year. The residency is intended to suit the work-flow of experimental filmmakers, therefore eligibility criteria are deliberately kept open. Short, medium, as well as feature-length films are welcome, on the condition that their shooting is completed and their editing is already advanced, with or without the backing of an independent production company.
