Kenneth Anger (born February 3, 1927) is an American and author. He began making films around age nine, but his early films are now lost. His first film to see distribution was , filmed in Los Angeles in 1947, which gained the attention of Jean Cocteau, who then invited him to go to Paris. In 1949, Anger directed The Love That Whirls which according to the 1972 book Experimental Cinema contained (faked) nudity, and was thus confiscated by the film lab. While most of his films are short subject (ranging from 3.5 minutes to 30 minutes) mood pieces, in 1955 he made a documentary film of the ruins of Crowley's in Cefalù, Sicily, which is now considered a lost film.
Cinematic magician, legendary provocateur, author of the infamous Hollywood Babylon book, Kenneth Anger is a unique figure in post-war American culture. His iconic short films are characterised by a mystical-symbolic visual language and phantasmagorical-sensual opulence that underscores the medium’s transgressive potential. Anger’s work fundamentally shaped the aesthetics of 1960s and 1970s subcultures, the visual lexicon of pop and music videos and queer iconography.

1962 to 1964 was a pivotal moment in the evolution of American arts and culture, especially in New York City. These years, crucial to the development of Pop, Minimalism, and performance, saw the emergence of a new generation of radical artists, as well as venues that gave their iconoclastic work a home and a context. Movies, meanwhile, were undergoing a transformation of their own: the rise of a truly independent cinema, of works unencumbered by the medium’s aesthetic conventions and commercial imperatives.

Katherine Bauer was born in Houston, Texas, and has recently been living in France. She mainly works with 16mm film and its plastic potential in the context of sculptures, installations and films. Mythologies, folklores, obscure rites, its sources of inspiration find their forms thanks to the photochemical runes. Herschell Gordon Lewis would not have denied Psycho Pussy Slaughter, a video film she made in 2007. Films screened in her presence.

Como extensión de su exposición en Nave 0 de Matadero, Cineteca acoge AR, FOGO, TERRA, ÁGUA, una carta blanca en la que la artista brasileña Ana Vaz (Brasilia, 1986) pone en diálogo su propio trabajo con una personal historia del cine en la que reivindica una poética-física de la impureza. De Bruce Baillie a Toshio Matsumoto, pasando por los nuevos cines latinoamericanos y la vanguardia norteamericana, Vaz nos invita a un viaje elemental -aire, fuego, tierra, agua- por un cine personal y político, artístico y etnográfico.
