Go go go! Women in Experimental Animation: The Crafty Animator

On July 11th Bristol Cube will screen the final in the BEEF organised Go go go: Women in Experimental Animation series. There's a line up of great films, plus guest speaker Caroline Ruddell, co editor of 'The Crafty Animator: Handmade Craft-based Animation and Cultural Value', will introduce the screening!

The films within this programme deploy modes of humour, irony, absurdity, the grotesque, mystery, beauty and defiance where qualities of shape, colour, texture, light, materiality and movement and questions of process itself are given priority.

Experimental and Expanded Animation. New Perspectives and Practices
This book discusses developments and continuities in experimental animation that, since Robert Russet and Cecile Starr’s Experimental Animation: Origins of a New Art (1976), has proliferated in the context of expanded cinema, performance and live ‘making’ and is today exhibited in galleries, public sites and online. With reference to historical, critical, phenomenological and inter-disciplinary approaches, international researchers offer new and diverse methodologies for thinking through these myriad animation practices.

Saturated colour, sensor mutilation and seminal film flicker take over two floors of The Brunswick Club. Avant-garde film pioneer Malcolm Le Grice introduces a selection of his films including Little Dog for Roger (1967) and the dual 16mm version of Berlin Horse (1970). Peter Tscherkassky’s sensual and spectral The Exquisite Corpus (2015) completes the screenings.

Edge of Frame: Signal to Noise

Edge of Frame started life as a blog on experimental animation written by artist and curator Edwin Rostron, and last year grew into a boundary-hopping weekender at the Whitechapel Gallery and Close-Up Cinema. We asked Rostron to put together a special Optical Sound-inspired programme of shorts, and he’s delivered the goods with a selection of extraordinary experiments exploring sound and music in various interesting ways.

Edges: an Animation Seminar

This seminar – part of the Edge of Frame Weekend – will address the questions of where experimental animation practice sits – at the ‘edges’ – in relation to independent animation, visual arts, histories, institutions. The seminar will do this not through the usual presentation of papers, but by asking artists, curators and academics to offer propositions and provocations, citing up to three works that illustrate their case.

Edge of Frame: Elemental Animation

A programme of works which use the material of film itself as a canvas. These visceral, vibrant films feature camera-less techniques such as scratching, painting and printing onto the filmstrip, subjecting film to decay and decomposition, and affixing materials such as letraset or insects to its surface. The remarkable visions created through these diverse approaches fill the frame with dynamic textures and colour, and many will be presented on 16mm and 35mm prints. Seen in the cinema, these works achieve a powerful effect, immersing us in strange and previously unseen worlds, and displaying the breadth and scope of abstract film.
