  • DIM Cinema: Marie Menken - Eye Music in Red Major

    By on

“Marie it was who first of all of us discovered that hypnagogic envisioning need not only be done at night.” -Stan Brakhage

The influence of Marie Menken on American experimental filmmaking cannot be overstated. Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas, Andy Warhol, Kenneth Anger — all these better-known names owed much of their own development as filmmakers to her. Trained as a painter, she manipulated her Bolex camera like a set of brushes and palette knives. The films in this program, several of them tributes to other artists, are bold experiments with light and motion. Beyond the pyrotechnics of camerawork and editing, what inspires is the bodily connection to subject matter, held close like a partner in dance.

In this third installment of the X-Ray series hosted by the Department of Media Art of Ghent's Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), guest curator Sebastian Buerkner (UK) together with Courtisane personally presents a program featured around spatiality.

Buerkner's computer animated work guides us through an ambiguous universe of abstract interiors, stylized forms and fluid color fields. He situates his films Triband and The Chimera of M within an experimental context that misleads viewers in its spatiality, with work by Ken Jacobs (Capitalism: Slavery), Blake Williams (Red Capriccio), Takashi Ito (Spacy) and Alexandre Larose (Brouillard Passage #14).

  • PAF 2016: Film Labor

    By on

PAF - Festival of Film Animation's section Film Labor presents contemporary experimental productions and activities by filmmakers from so-called artist-run film labs (film laboratories run by the artists themselves). There are more than fifty such groups all over the world dealing with film, in the sense of working with film material. Thanks to the technological and institutional transformation of cinematographic infrastructure, independent artists may now use industrial equipment and instruments that were previously only available in institutions. The aim of the cycle is to reflect their activities, which significantly change the options for film production and are often referred to as “experimental film.” Film Labor will introduce artists from film labs in Grenoble, Barcelona and Berlin.

    By on

A programme of screenings to accompany the exhibition “The Thinking Machine. Ramon Llull and the «ars combinatoria»

Before artists worked with computers, a series of avant-garde painters such as Oskar Fischinger, Harry Smith and Jordan Belson created a form of non-narrative film that addressed geometry, the possibilities of mathematic combinations, and spirituality. After these visionaries, artists like John Whitney embraced the new synthetic image medium to continue exploring abstract animation. Many artists have followed in their wake, up until the present day.

  • OFFoff Cinema: Televizinho, a live video-essay by Veridiana Zurita

    By on

Televizinho is an ongoing project of re-enactments of soap operas in different contexts in Brazil. Its first edition took place in 2014 when Veridiana Zurita worked together with the riverside community 'Santa Isabel' in the Amazon. During 4 months she lived together with different families along the Tupana river, eating what they ate , sleeping as they did, watching what they watched: soap operas. Every night they looked at the soap together and picked out a scene to re-enact the next day. While using the participants' houses as movie set, the re-enactments took the form of something between fiction and documentary. The way soaps seem to order language and physicality was disturbed by those re-enacting it while different logics of appropriation were inaugurated.
