This programme brings three formally different works by filmmakers based in the US, who approach Haiti as outsiders.
From the position of an outsider, each work seeks to document and understand the customs and everyday life of the Haitian communities they encounter, serving as fleeting historical glimpses of rituals and ceremonies performed on the island.
A Synesthete’s Atlas: Cartographic Improvisations between Eric Theise and The Asthmatic
Real-time cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated digital maps by Eric Theise in collaboration with The Asthmatic (Sigrid Harmon), a one-woman band and sound collage artist. A visual wash of street grids, land masses, water bodies, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Orphaned labels. Free-floating symbology. Saturated colors and the subtlest of tints. Jittery zooms, pans, and traversals. Glitches from crowdsourced data.
“Siempre me ha interesado ese tipo de cine. Ese tipo de película de ventana en la que colocas la cámara y la dejas, durante un largo periodo de tiempo. Canadian Pacific tardó unos tres meses. Cuando me mudé a ese estudio, enseguida vi la ventana y pensé que ahí se podía hacer algo. Lo que me interesaba de la toma eran las horizontales: las vías del tren, el agua, las montañas, el cielo. Había muy pocas verticales. En cierto modo, esos cuatro elementos cambiaban.
