“My Own Private Mekas” film program at Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan 2022.Official Trailer
In this year’s EX!T 12, we present you “My Own Private Mekas”, a retrospective program of the centennial celebration of Jonas Mekas’s life long work. The idea started in 2019, when Mekas passed away on January 23, 2019. In memory of Jonas Mekas, we selected 3 short films from his 365 Day Project in our Taiwan International Cat Film Festival 2020. They were 3 little films of Maxi the Anthology Film Archives cat. In 2022, the year of Mekas’s centennial celebration, the Mekas 100! Program curated by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian Culture Institute and Estate of Jonas Mekas gather and celebrate the life and work of Jonas Mekas with different countries around the world, including Lithuania, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, South Korea, and so on. Taiwan of course will not be absent in this global celebration of Jonas Mekas.
In EX!T 12, we focus on the films of Jonas Meka’s that have rarely been known or screened for general audience. The 9 films we selected represent and highlight, besides the importance of Jonas Mekas as a diary filmmaker and the godfather of avant-garde cinema, a different part of Meka’s filmmaking career and his overall oeuvre, which connect and emphasize his relationships with experimental film, contemporary art, home movie, and Hollywood. The program we present to you this year is a private landscape of Jonas Mekas and his own private Lithuania, or his own private Ithaca. It is also our own private Mekas along the life journey in each one of us in every personal and private film screening.
