Announcing our 7th annual New Year New Work Program! These two screenings showcase the wide-ranging work of both new and long-term FMC members.

Program 1
- Continuous Becoming – 9.5 mins, Robert Orlowski
Utilizing the concept of space-time popularized by Einstein’s special relativity, "Continuous Becoming" attempts to translate 4 dimensional space through the 2 dimensional plane. The film revolves around the axis of a 360 degree camera rotation. With each rotation, partitions are gradually added dividing the frame, each of which, are off-set by a frame ahead in time.

- Twin Voyagers – 6 min, Barbara Lattanzi
"Twin Voyagers" is a digital animation in the series,'Dust Devils'. The Guardian news site, Nov.4, 2019, reported that both NASA Voyager spacecraft have escaped the solar system's outer boundary called the heliosphere: "The two Voyager probes, powered by steadily decaying plutonium, are projected to drop below critical energy levels in the mid-2020s. "

- I Smoke Whatever’s Left – 9.5 min, Zorko Sirotic
An unemployed cultural worker makes his way through an illegal business.

- Morse – 3 min, Tom Bessoir & John Baumann
A very brief history of Morse code told in Morse code.

- 6Skin – 12 min, Alice Maher & Aideen Barry
6SKIN is a sound and image fantasia incorporating live action and animation sequences. The film is constructed as a series of veils, skins and planes of flowing imagery which overlap and embrace each other in playful metamorphoses. Inspired by a series of French tapestries titled ‘The Woman and the Unicorn’ from the 1500’s, 6SKIN employs the highly patterned palette, repeated motifs and the non-perspectival space of medieval art.

- – 5 min, Sahar Sepahdari-Dalai
Dressed as an unlikely avatar in my mothers home in Brooklyn, I read a poem by Persian poet Rumi . The book was given to me by my deceased father. And one of his paintings comes to life to help with the reading.

- #52 MOUNTAIN Mountain – 4 min, Lili White
The I CHING is an ancient oracle that started out in a pictographic “language”, so there is no definitive “meaning.” That being said, language itself is a living thing that constantly changes. One of #52’s most basic associations meant “tending”— tending to one’s Triadic nature of body, soul and mind. It revolves around “stopping” when the situation calls for it; but also “moving” when the time is right. It revolves around quieting one’s heart and mind, so the is no “self “and no “other”.

- Crushed Glass – 22 min, Philip Weisman
This video was the result of three consecutive trips during the summer of 2018 that took me, temporarily, away from the comforts and distractions of New York City. This film is layered through several different approaches into a moving image collage that, in part, subjectively examines what is transpiring collectively, politically, and environmentally all around us.

- Under the Paving Stones- 16 min, Amanda Katz
On Brooklyn's East River waterfront, a new park built on tenuous ground, a new residence converted from a formerly industrial shell, a promise of lives of convenience. A film that circles around rhythms of labor and leisure.

- A Morning – 6 min, silent, Josh Lewis
Josh Lewis is a filmmaker and the director of NegativeLand. His work explores attention, manual knowledge, and the persisting enigma of material potential.

- Open eyes in shadows- 5 min, Rrose Present
A study of movement, sound, and changing light filmed in Barcelona.

- Topless – 13 min, Cara Perlman & Jane Sherry
A docu-dramedy about one night in the life of a topless dancer. Jane was my roommate while she was dancing in real life. We built the set in my apartment. She brought in her real waitress. We gathered some johns and made a story.

- A Dialogue of Dissonance – 6 min, Kalpana Subramanian
An aesthetic meditation on the technological incompatibilities of cinematic apparatus that engages the poetics of materiality. Light and projections mediated by a 16mm projector playing a ageing strip of stock film, are captured by a state-of-the-art video camera at various speeds and settings. Visual ‘disruptions’ that occur as these disparate media engage with each other, creates a ‘dialogue of dissonance’, blurring lines between the digital and analogic and between the pro-filmic and filmic. This film is from the series ‘Light Mediated: Eyes on Brakhage’ (2016).

- Strainul – 9 min, Pip Chodorov
Romanian fairy tales usually start with the sentence: “Once upon a time something happened, if it hadn’t happened it couldn’t be told.” In this fairy tale, a stranger visits the remote mountain village of Slon.
This film was made at an annual ten-day filmmaking residency in Slon. As a stranger myself, first time to Romania, with only four days to shoot and four days to edit, I wrote this modern-day fairy tale to coincide with my fantasy idea of what my unpredictable visit to the village would be like.

- Ten: Gaps in the Mesh – 5 min, Rachael Guma
Filmed on a rainy day on Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn and China Town, Manhattan as a companion to the sound composition Gaps in the Mesh by TEN. This transatlantic collaboration was initiated through the Film-Maker's Cooperative, when Døminic Dean, the musician behind TEN, contacted the filmmaker Rachael Guma after seeing her listing on the FMC website.

- Empathy Test – 4 min, Art Jones
A letter to a Nationalist by the last undesirable departing for the planet Jupiter.

- Hattie – 20 min, Danielle Chu
Hattie, a striking 75-year-old, searches online for the expression of her own myth.

- Deal- 4 min, Gary Adelstein & Jerry Orr.
A collaboration between Gary Adelstein and Jerry Orr from Pennsylvania hoping you will vote in 2020.

- Blue Movie- 7 min, Michael Morris
Blue Movie is an elegiac tribute to the late Juanita Slusher, a Dallas-based exotic dancer well known in the 50s and 60s as "Candy Barr". Footage from the stag-film Smart Alec, a film given to me by my grandfather, is used as the majority of the source imagery set to a rendition of Autumn Leaves performed by Dallas-based vocalist Lily Taylor.
