LUNA PARK DUTCH TRIP
▎retrospective GERARD HOLTHUIS

Gerard Holthuis (1952) started out as a sculptor and moved into moving image and sound at the Free Academy in The Hague. In the 1980s he worked as an editor, cameraman and production manager. He co-founded the Filmstad Foundation, a workshop for experimental filmmakers. A globetrotter, he is a fan of fairground cinema.
In France, we only know the first and last films of this retrospective. Seen, seen again and again. They are hits. Unusable and for all audiences.
Does the cinema have a future? After this session, with a silly smile and wobbly legs, you will no longer ask yourself the question. "Again!" Attention producers...
Beware, there will be no second round.

HONG KONG
1999 - 35mm film - B&W - sound - 13 minutes
Landing or taking off from the old Hong Kong airport of Kai Tak was always a challenge, a borderline experience for passengers and inhabitants alike.
Its intra-urban location meant that Boeing, Airbus and other jumbo jets had to fly close to the city... A symphony of jet engines and a Buddhist halt, incandescent images, the hairs on your arms prickle with pleasure. It was the 20th century.
-
CITY AT NIGHT (AMS)
2000 - 35mm film - B&W - sound - 9 minutes 27 seconds
The camera moves along the corridors of a car park, through a canal, a tunnel... A manhunt? A visit from a UFO?
-
SFO (THE WEST)
2000 - 35mm film - B&W - sound - 10 minutes / editing : Nathalie Alonso Casale / sound: Kees Van der Knaap / music: Hieronymus Wouter
This experimental documentary is a road movie that cuts through the American Wild West. From Monument Valley to Joshua Tree, from Death Valley to our most distant film memories.

CARELESS REEF PART 1 : PREFACE
2005 - 35mm film - B&W - sound - 4 minutes / camera: Hein van Liempd / sound: Guy Amitailight, Rob Lagendijk
Dive into a face.
-
CARELESS REEF PART 2: ABU KIFFAN
2005 - 35mm film - colour - sound - 7 minutes 52 seconds / sound: Telcosystems
Drowned in sound, we float above the Abu Kiffan reef, near Safaga in Egypt.
-
CARELESS REEF PART 3
2006 - 35mm film - colour - sound - 9 minutes / digital post-production: Reinier van Brummelen / sound: Telcosystems, Guy Amitai, Gerard Holthuis
Man was born of the sea and has lost his memory of it... Under the surface of the water, we are the camera: it is a return to the origins.
-
CARELESS REEF PART 4: MARSA ABU GALAWA
2004 - 35mm film - colour - sound - 13 minutes / assistant editor: Machteld Blom / music: Abdel Baset Hamouda
Red Sea. A song by the Egyptian musician Abdel Basset Hamoud comes out of the speakers full blast. Captain Cousteau is on acid. Underwater flora and fauna undulate, run wild. Aquatic flickers. Ultimate parade.

CITY AT NIGHT (AMS)
2000 - 35mm film - N&B - sonore - 9 minutes 27 secondes

SFO (THE WEST)

CARELESS REEF PART 1 : PREFACE
2005 - 35mm film - N&B - sonore - 4 minutes / camera: Hein van Liempd / son : Guy Amitailight, Rob Lagendijk
Plongée dans un visage.

CARELESS REEF PART 2 : ABU KIFFAN

CARELESS REEF PART 4: MARSA ABU GALAWA
2004 - 35mm film - couleur - sonore - 13 minutes / assistant montage : Machteld Blom / musique : Abdel Baset Hamouda
Mer Rouge. Flickers aquatiques. Ultime parade.
