  • Close-Up Cinema: Field and Frame

    By on

Having shared a studio for two years; Bea Haut, Jenny Baines and Laura Hindmarsh here bring together their respective film work, using the screening as a conversation between the individual works and a chance to examine the echoes, absorptions and outcomes of their interlacing practices. Serving as a continuation of an ongoing dialogue that started in the studio with no specific mediated outcome, this programme is a reflection of the open situation and interrelation between approaches over the past two years. Exploring the outer reaches of the film frame, analogue processes and projection structures, these three artists take the subjective as pivotal.

  • Chaos and Order, an iotaCenter Salon

    By on

Witness a collection of visual music from across time and from around the world that represent the spectrum of rationality. Order on the one side and chaos on the other.  Are they truly polar opposites? Is there order in total chaos or chaos in highly organized forms?  Tell us your thoughts in this night of films and discussion.

Salons are a signature component of the iotaCenter, the world’s first organization devoted to visual music.  These are wonderful nights where we get together as a community of artists, academics and curious onlookers to pontificate on the wild and abstract works called “visual music.”

  • Early Monthly Segments #87: Remembering Roberto Ariganello

    By on

Early Monthly Segments presents a special evening of 16mm films by the late Roberto Ariganello (1961-2006) on the 10th anniversary of his sudden passing. We will remember Roberto at an intimate screening in his former apartment on College and Dufferin. Even if you only met Roberto once, it’s guaranteed that his warmth, exuberance and passion for film making has stayed with you ever since. The energies he shared with filmmakers and film lovers in Toronto and beyond resonates ten years after he left us much too soon.

  • Seeing Double: Films by Antonia Kuo and Lily Jue Sheng

    By on

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is pleased to present
Seeing Double: Films by Antonia Kuo and Lily Jue Sheng
    Kuo and Sheng in attendance

Antonia Kuo and Lily Jue Sheng are visiting artists from Brooklyn collaborating at LIFT from July 4 to August 17. This screening will present a number of their single and dual channel 16mm films—including Chromoflux, Seeing Double and Point, Line, Plane—as well as showcasing the work that they've done while in residency at LIFT. Their films explore the fleeting temporality of an immersive optical experience, emphasizing oscillating, flickering compositions that exploit the frame-by-frame structure of 16mm film through in-camera and stop-motion collage animation and mirror the visual world of their parallel practices in print-making and photography. The frenetic pace of shifting abstractions create visual unrest, mirroring the unstable flux inherent in natural systems, spanning all scales of matter.

  • Peter Hutton Tribute – Canyon Cinema Salon, led by Steve Anker

    By on

“…For thirty years now, Peter Hutton has been building a radical and singular body of work. A sort of primitive documentary, silent, which celebrates the beauty of the world without forgetting to observe people, the conditions they live and work under…” – Cahiers du cinéma

The loss of Peter Hutton in June robbed personal independent filmmaking of one of its great artists and teachers. Through nearly fifty years of 16mm filmmaking, Peter took one of the fundamental aspects of cinema, the fixed rectangular frame, and made it his primary artistic focus, a means of exploring vision and consciousness. Peter’s elegant compositions were silent windows that documented widely divergent locations as places of mysterious activity, filled with sensual forms and subtle rhythms. The 16mm camera was Peter’s sketchpad, and it accompanied him on his travels to many parts of the world. His sharp observational eye was critical and politically aware, and was always alert to marvels of the moment, visual details that the camera was able to record and that would normally be missed.
