The International Videoart Festival CUVO launches a new open call for the next edition of the festival called "Alternative Screens" intended for video artists all around the globe. This year we want to focus on the idea of alternative as it was analyzed by cultural theorist Mark Fisher.
We'll select eight of the most innovative videoart pieces that will shape the travelling exhibition of the festival in Spain along 2024.
For many years, Jerome Hiler only showed his films in intimate home screenings. He occasionally presented an illustrated talk, “Cinema Before 1300,” exploring his fascination with medieval stained glass. After a presentation at the Harvard Film Archive in 2017, Haden Guest proposed creating a digital version of the slide lecture, which is screened here for the first time.
“Heartbeat creates the scope. Space inside the eye. We are nerve endings of a large retina. Perception is corpuscular and wavelike. The word was deleted. Light and sound are frequencies, and thought is communicated tactilely. Light, color, shapes, intervals, resonances, moving sympathies till the conversion and fusion…” —José Val del Omar (undated)
A Synesthete’s Atlas: Cartographic Improvisations between Eric Theise and The Asthmatic
Real-time cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated digital maps by Eric Theise in collaboration with The Asthmatic (Sigrid Harmon), a one-woman band and sound collage artist. A visual wash of street grids, land masses, water bodies, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Orphaned labels. Free-floating symbology. Saturated colors and the subtlest of tints. Jittery zooms, pans, and traversals. Glitches from crowdsourced data.
Co-curated by artist Zara Joan Miller, this evening explores several approaches by artists thinking through non-conforming bodies and their radical potentials.
The programme brings together several works by Miller, into a conversation with material made by other artists, resulting in a layered interaction between filmmakers seeking new ways to frame the rhythms of the body.
Since April 2022 Eric Theise has been manipulating projected digital maps in collaboration with improvising musicians in Europe and the United States. Constraining his project to use only web mapping technologies, A Synesthete's Atlas is his unique approach to expanded cinema, drawing strategies from experimental film & animation, the Light and Space movement, 1960s light shows, and visual poetry.
