Your eyes see what, like 10 or 15 images a second; that¹s 10Hz.  Your ears can hear 15,000 Hz. Surely there must be something interesting in this incongruity.

Now in it¹s 6th edition, KYTN is one of Europe¹s leading festivals of sound and image.  It¹s all about exploring the many different ways we navigate the borders, disparities and similarities between what we hear and what we see. It involves some of the great experimental artists, musicians and filmmakers of our time, and some of the not too distant future also.  It features some hard as nails experimental work, but it¹s an experience any right minded person should enjoy, be confounded by, have an opinion about at least. features: sine wave charcoal drawing, blindfolded listening, visual harmonics, optical sound, video-radio-guitar feedback, the Tay bridge, a sonic photograph of a Dalmatian fishing village, tiny rice paper flags, set theory...

When Nam June Paik and Aldo Tambellini began working with electronic media in the 1960s, video meant one thing: TV. Both artists came to video by way of sculptural and environment-based art, and it was the physical TV set which was their port of entry. Although Paik is the more widely recognised of the two, both featured in the seminal 1969 video installation exhibition, “TV as
a Creative Medium” at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York, in which TVs were put into all sorts of unlikely sculptural and environmental contexts. The impetus for environment-based art was generally a desire to break down the traditionally passive and disengaged structures of art exhibition. The introduction into this context of that most passive and 2D of forms was seen by artists as a way of reclaiming and (sometimes literally) redesigning an incredibly powerful and dominant form of communication. As Paik put it, "Television has been attacking us all our lives – now we can attack it back."

JONAS MEKAS PRESENTS FLUX PARTY

Legendary artist-filmmaker Jonas Mekas presents FLUX PARTY featuring
the Fluxfilm Anthology as assembled by George Maciunas, rare Fluxus
audio and surprise performances. Drinks and specially made Fluxcakes
will be served.

Fluxus was a provocative and humorous art movement that produced
objects, performances and events which challenged the boundaries
between traditional art and everyday life. Early Fluxus pieces included
feeding a bale of hay to a piano, a painting to be stepped on, or the
sound of dripping water.

The Fluxfilm Anthology, showing here in its most comprehensive version
to date, includes "Zen for Film" (clear film for collecting dust),
"Four" (Yoko Ono’s infamous film of bare bottoms), "Smoking" (cigarette
smoke shot with a high speed camera) and other films of comical street
performances, counting games, x-ray movies and interference patterns.
The Fluxfilms embodied the minimal aesthetic, playfulness and poetic
dimensions of Fluxus and transposed its performative aspect into the
cinema.

This informal late night screening is a unique chance to see films by
artists such as George Brecht, John Cale, Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono, Nam
June Paik, Paul Sharits, Chieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, Wolf Vostell and
Robert Watts presented on the big screen of the Rio Cinema, East
London's splendid art deco picture palace. Jonas Mekas will be present
to discuss Fluxus and his friend and fellow Lithuanian émigré, the late
George Maciunas.

Seminal figures of the New York downtown art scene since the beginning
of the 1960s, Jonas Mekas (b.1922) and George Maciunas (1931-78) were
connected through many different projects. Mekas was a central force of
the avant-garde film scene and presented early screenings at Maciunas’
AG Gallery. Maciunas coordinated Fluxus as an international community
of artists, whose contributors also included Joseph Beuys, Henry Flynt,
Takehisa Kosugi, John Lennon and La Monte Young.

Maciunas was also fundamental in the emergence of SoHo as an artistic
centre in New York. As early as 1966, he began to purchase dilapidated
industrial buildings and convert them into cooperative real estate,
starting the trend for loft style living. Jonas Mekas was one of the
first to participate in the Fluxhouse venture, acquiring space for both
his own home and the Filmmakers’ Cinematheque / Anthology Film Archives.

Last year, Mekas returned to Lithuania to inaugurate the Jonas Mekas
Visual Arts Center in Vilnius, presenting his own Fluxus collection to
the public for the first time in a joint Mekas / Maciunas exhibition.
The centre is planning an extensive film archive and a Fluxus Research
Institute. In 2009, Mekas will act as the Ambassador of Vilnius during
its year as the European Capital of Culture.

- X-Ray Film I - The Alimentary System (Fleisch Archive, 1936, 16mm, silent, 11 min., 22fps, Germany)
This is the first of several of Prof. Robert Janker’s x-ray films. The
filmmaker was a pioneer of x-ray cinematography. The film was featured
in a TIE-2005 festival program, showcasing educational films that were
released during the Third Reich in Germany.

- Un Chant D'Amour (Jean Genet, 1950, 16mm, silent, 23min., 24fps, France)
One of the most memorable avant-garde films ever made, Un Chant D'Amour
is also one of the most controversial. Made by the famed writer, Jean
Genet, it features uncensored, sensual, jail-house scenes. Two
prisoners in complete isolation, separated by the thick brick walls,
and desperately in need of human contact, devise a most unusual kind of
communication.

- Spectator (Frans Zwartjes, 1970, 16mm, optical sound, 11min., 24fps, Netherlands)
Hidden safely behind his camera, the photographer can't get enough of
what the glamorous model, with her long eye lashes, has to offer him.

- The Secret Cinema (Paul Bartel, 1968, 16mm, optical sound, 30min., 24fps, USA)
The Secret Cinema is a black-comic tale of a woman whose fears that her
life is being filmed for the entertainment of her friends turn out to
be true. The film presaged the sardonic tone of most of the maker's
later work (Eating Raoul), though he would mostly abandon The Secret
Cinema's experimental aspects in favor of linear narratives with
perverse touches.
