  • Christoph Girardet & Matthias Müller - Tell Me What You See

    By on

Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller predominately make use of found footage in their films which they combine to produce new works. Their dealings with the media of film come together in intense combinations of images and film collages that unfold new layers of meaning.

Locomotive from 2008, a fast-moving video triptych comprising scene showing railway trains taken from hundreds of movies, came about in this manner. Departure and arrival, endings and new beginnings, exoticism and the thrill of adventure interlock are condensed into an exciting new narrative.

Meteor from 2011 is a filmic metaphor for childhood desire and imagination. Assembled from movies, uprooted fragments from fairy tales and old science fiction material, Meteor stages the imaginary world of the child at the threshold of self-discovery and disentanglement. Black and white excerpts of aggressive, fearful or languorous boys from films by Jean Vigo, Ingmar Bergman or François Truffaut merge with glowingly colorful images of rockets speeding through outer space or cosmic objects from the genre of science fiction.

  • Cine de Exposición: Instalaciones fílmicas de Andrés Denegri

    By on

  • Spectacle of Light and Languages

    By on

Microscope Gallery welcomes Philadelphia-based film and video artist Peter Rose for “Spectacle of Light and Languages”, a comprehensive screening of his works in film and video since the 70s, including the premiere of his latest short Solaristics and footage from new 3D works-in-progress.

A mathematical training underlies Rose’s early structural films, where quick cuts and superimposed images form the basis of a kinesthetic exploration of space, time, light and perception. Lyricism and a persistent attempt at breaking down language and meaning continue to guide the artist’s later works, in a personal and uncompromising search for transcendence.

Peter Rose will be in attendance to introduce the screening and available afterwards for Q&A.

  • Directors Lounge Screening: Gabriel Lyons Loeb - Poems & Trampolines

    By on

Gabriel Lyons Loeb is in love with pixelation and other digital artifacts as other artists are with the “Wabisabi” of Super-8, and the illuminating technical flaws of “spaghetti-style” developed small gauge film. For years now, he has used an old mobile phone camera to explore his surroundings and the media. He combines his poetry with video “blow-ups”, either coming from his own footage or from footage appropriated from the internet. One may ask if it is his love for a specific aesthetic, or if it is an artistic-bohemian gesture to use the cheapest material and a look that we usually regard as an internet-related shortcoming. It may be both, however, there may be a third motivation: in his final years at university he studied the effects of endless repetitions of footage he found on youtube and other transformative experiments, mainly by exposing himself. As earlier avant-gardists and pop-Artists such as Bruce Conner and Andy Warhol already found out, repetitions have a changing effect on our cognition and psyche.

  • Guy Sherwin - 11 films from 'Short Film Series'

    By on

Projection Rooms is pleased to be screening a programme of 11 films from 'Short Film Series' by Guy Sherwin between the hours of 12 and 4.30pm on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st. The work is part of an ongoing film project by Guy Sherwin which began in 1975. '

The series is held together by certain formal considerations: each film is three minutes long, i.e. the length of a roll of 16mm film, all films are b/w and silent, and the order in which they are shown is flexible. Apart from this there is a range of imagery from portraiture to still life to travel. The films operate on the border between movement and stillness, revealing their inner logic through an active engagement in looking. For the exhibition I have made two DVDs from the 16mm originals, one with 5 films and the other with 6 films. Thus the connections between the films are always changing. A DVD of 34 films from Short Film Series is in production with LUX, to be released late 2013'. - Guy Sherwin

The Revém Natura film/experience consists in a double film projection, that occur simultaneously. The films start after the long interaction that the screens make with sunset, because of the screen’s west orientation, when different text and textures appears as shadows on it. Cinema here is considered to be whole space/time experience. Something for the ” eyeear” to “hearsee”, moving images for the body.

  • Unconscious Archives: The Perfect Medium is the Wrong Message Part 2

    By on

Exploring the dual meaning of ‘mediation’ within performance – the physicality of interpretation, and transcendent ritual.

The fleeting trick of light from the corner of the eye, the brief contact point of chemicals intertwining and reacting, ghosts trapped in the home movie archive, non-human sounds and bodily digressions – ephemerality as told through the body’s appearance and disappearance.

Film archivist Guy Edmonds expounds his impossibly cross-genre home movie séance complete with invited local medium. Tai Shani’s personal pulp theatre show presents things unseen and unheard from the supernatural, and Jonathan Kemp attempts the recursive microwaving of sound. The ever prolific yet inherently underground Ryan Jordan (noise=noise) sets the scene for Possession Trance as DDD. Finally in an unique appearance Glasgow’s TVO (head honcho of the Broken 20 label), conducts his experiments for a bedtime dance floor.

Exploring the dual meaning of ‘mediation’ within performance – the physicality of interpretation, and the psychogeographic mode of ritual (intervention, ghost/shadow, chemical/hack, seance/spook and invocation as divergent themes).

The fleeting trick of light from the corner of the eye, the brief contact point of chemicals intertwining and reacting, ghosts trapped in the home movie archive, non-human sounds and bodily digressions – ephemerality as told through the body’s appearance/disappearance.

Renowned artist Aura Satz presents a unique sonic sculpture from her treasure trove, Sally Golding performs her classic projection piece Face of An Other, and Britain’s most under rated and detestable, accidental comic thespian Sir Gideon Vein brings us some live TV.
