  • Black Box Live @ Edinburgh International Film Festival

    By on

EIFF's experimental strand Black Box ventures outside the box for a second year of live expanded film performance. Multiple projector pieces combining analogue and digital material meet densely layered electronic and acoustic sounds. A veritable treat for the senses!

Guillaume Cailleau (France) & Jan Slak (Slovenia)

A sensuous combination of tangible sound and stereo film projection gradually increasing in speed, force and intensity. Alternating frames of color originating from two Super 8mm projectors combine with bass drum and snare, wrapping the pulsating and interfering frequencies of light into a vibrating human body. A transcendent analogue experience - physical, radical, handmade, and live.

  • eau de cinema: constellations & contradictions

    By on

    Opening: July 13, 18h

Microscope Gallery is extremely pleased to present the first solo exhibition of works at the gallery by Bradley Eroseau de cinema: constellations & contradictions finds the seminal New York artist – who is recognized for his work with multiple mediums, both the concrete and ephemeral, and as a force behind numerous collaborative endeavors – in pursuit of the essence of the artistic impulse.

The exhibition is an elaboration on Eros’ eau de cinema, a concept he has been developing for several years and has now extended to the mediums of film and video installation, photography, sound, collage, sculpture, drawings and other works on paper, some as collaborations including those with members of the expanded cinema & sound group Optipus, which will be added during the course of the exhibition. For eau de cinema: constellations & contradictions, Eros assumes as his starting point the moving image, specifically works on celluloid film in which the actual work is an ephemeral by-product of the physical materials, requiring a projector and light to be viewed. He suggests that much like perfume, film is an experience that lingers in both space and memory.

  • Inner Visions/Outer Worlds: The Films of Clint Enns and Leslie Supnet

    By on

An art-making duo, Clint Enns and Leslie Supnet work both independently and together, sharing duties, skills, and visions to assemble some of the most inventive and charming recent experimental film and video in Canada. Both artists bring a strong DIY practice and aesthetic to their films and videos. Often reworking established aesthetic and technical objects and forms — canonical experimental films, television commercials, pop ephemera — Enns brings together an ironical, satirical edge with an underlying sincerity to create a space for new visions and energies to emerge. Glitch, circuit-bending, and/or appropriation is often the name of the game in Enns’s lovingly combative relationship with the canons of consensus. Supnet’s whimsical, and sometimes surreal, animations and short films draw from her everyday experiences, looking inward to communicate intimate observations and subtly moving thoughts and feelings through the image. In her carefully crafted hand-made puppetry, for instance, Supnet tackles issues at once idiosyncratically personal and resonantly political. Taken together, their work coalesces and counterpoints to construct a delicate, searching, and always intriguing engagement with the contemporary world.

  • Rewriting Film History, Reinventing Film Apparatus

    By on

Microscope is very pleased to present Rewriting Film History, Reinventing Film Apparatus a program of 16mm films curated by Enrico Camporesi. The evening includes historical and more recent works by Jean-Michel Bouhours, Werner Nekes, David Wharry, Mary Helena Clark, Ernst Schimdt Jr., and Peter Miller that have rarely, if ever, screened in the US, and coming from the Light Cone Collection (Paris). Enrico Camporesi's description of the show follows: The notion of rewriting film history has constantly haunted moving image production. In the same way, challenging the basic cinematographic apparatus (the screen, the projection, etc.) has been a crucial issue in avant-garde filmmaking. The program seeks to explore the diverse strategies that have been adopted by experimental and avant-garde filmmakers in order to investigate such themes. The films are selected from the collection of Light Cone, the main European distributor for experimental and avant-garde films, and have been rarely (if ever) screened in the United States.

  • Oporto apresenta #33: Maarten Ploeg's "Land"

    By on

    "Land", by Maarten Ploeg
Commodore Amiga file transferred to video.Colour, stereo sound, loop, 1992

In an old edition of Enciclopédia Luso-Brasileira, the entry word computer (then called ordenador) is illustrated with a vector-based drawing of a face. It shows the first computer-generated drawing, depicting the kind face of a samurai. That funny looking picture can be seen as the computer's first attempt at a self-portrait, a clear demonstration of its highly complex level of self-determination.

Maarten Ploeg was a multi-talented genius born in the flat lands of Holland. Trained as a visual artist, he was part of the punk music scene in the late seventies (Soviet Sex, Blue Murder and Astral Bodies), as well as a pioneer in computer art and in the art of TV piracy. He was co-founder of PKP TV, a channel that hacked regular broadcasting and of Park 4DTV (http://www.park.nl/), a still operational art platform.

  • Jodie Mack - Let Your Light Shine: Screening & Performance

    By on

Jodie Mack is an American animator/performance artist whose work questions the regimes of looking and the stability of human perception in a post-psychedelic world. Under Mack’s direction, merch tables meet museum gift stores, the sublime meets Sublime the band, and stoner shop tie-dyes and dollar-store trinkets collude to create pulsing, ebullient spectacles. This stroboscopic collection of animated films and performances shines a light on the incessant stream of abstract imagery that permeates our everyday lives - unleashing a kinetic energy that resides in wasted and overlooked consumer objects. Through exquisite layering and Mack’s trademark cut ’n’ paste flash frame animation techniques, complex patterns of movement ensue which she calls ‘anti-sequences’.
