  • Independent Film Show 13th Edition

    By on

Independent Film Show 13th edition, an international show dedicated to experimental cinema, anticipates the annual event on Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June, planning the three programs and the two expanded cinema performances on the Museo Nitsch’s terrace.

The Independent Film Show focuses on the multiple processes that film/video-makers create to give structure to the intense relationships that exist between the devices used for projection and the interpretative participation of the audience. Past editions have often highlighted the special capabilities of experimental cinema, which does not impose a standardised view, but requires the spectator to watch with conscious application, in order to appreciate the intricate formal representations, the complex social codes, and extensive cognitive aspirations that extend beyond the screen. The immersive possibility of establishing direct contact with independent cinematic philosophies and highlighting the alternatives and innovations that subvert the logic of the standard production is the key to the approach required to access these complex visual patterns. The interference of the lights of the milieu, the position of the projectors, the reflective quality of the screen, the line of vision and its position within the field of vision contribute to the creation of the film, and it is at the moment that the viewer becomes aware of the solidity of the photons, which impress upon his gaze and envelop the body, that the cognitive process able to form complex mental structures is activated.

  • Sheffield Fringe 2013 programme announced

    By on

The full programme for the 3rd edition of Sheffield Fringe (June 14-15) in collaboration with Bloc Projects & Bloc Studios in Sheffield has been announced. The 3rd edition of Sheffield Fringe considers the critical possibilities of film as both documentary and art. This year’s programme traces back through the film co-op movement of the 80s, and earlier experimental film in continuous dialogue with new documentary practices.

Charlotte Ginsborg’s Over the Bones launches Sheffield Fringe 2013, as the opening salvo of a curatorial mix tape that positions artists’ film as musical. The remarkable Sheffield Media Unit archive (1984-89), affirms Sheffield as a centre of both resistance and serious play. In tribute to Michael Grigsby, Living on the Edge (1987) reveals the impact of the Thatcher era on three families, counterbalancing the exuberance Sheffield Media Unit. Urban Observations, guest curated this year by November Paynter, presents videos that work with performance, recital and gathering to share very specific and diverse tales of Istanbul and beyond. Annexinema are showing George Barber ‘s I was once involved in a shit show, Peter Kubelka’s Afrikareise and more + Live A/V performances by Neil Webb, Ron Wright, Rob Barker, Joe Moran & guests.

BLOC PROJECTS Friday 14th June 6pm & Saturday 15th June 12-9pm, 71 Eyre Lane, Sheffield S1 4RB. Admission to all events is free.

  • Balagan presents... Mirror Stage

    Balagan presents... Mirror Stage
    Monday, May 13 2013, 19:30h
    Brattle Theatre
40 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138

Much has been said about what is regarded as the quintessential cinematic experience: the darkened, softened, uterine surroundings, the hypnotic flicker ahead, the lulling whirr from the projection booth. It is a comfortable hiding place from which to observe others\' nightmares and desires. As much as we at Balagan embrace this fancy, we like to break the spell on occasion by channeling an earlier form of cinema, when projected images elicited bewilderment instead of reverie.

This time, we aim to shatter cinematic illusions by shifting our attention 180° away from the spectacle. As we ponder the screen, the stage and the curtains; as we gaze into the spectators\' faces and observe their body language -- entranced or impatient -- we see a reflection of ourselves. So we enter Lacan's "mirror stage": the anxious moment of catching sight of oneself for the first time and beginning to grasp the reality of one\'s existence.
