  • Light Movement 20: Takashi Makino / Rei Hayama

    By on

Screening and Live performance in the presence of the artists.

This month we are very lucky to present two filmmakers, both from Japan, and both making work which could be seen as a hybrid form between video and celluloid. The films and performances of Makino Takashi are closely related to a specific form of musical energy or sonic environment, evoking a vast cosmos in space, diffusing particles of light across the screen, and even in the space between screen and audience.

  • The exhibition of a film: a project by Mathieu Copeland

    By on

The film as exhibition site is at the centre of this experimental project, both curatorial and cinematographic, by French curator Mathieu Copeland. The exhibition of a film brings together visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, performers, choreographers, and writers around the question “Can an exhibition take place in a film rather than a gallery space?” While working the constraints intrinsic to feature-length film, it aims at being something other than a structuralist “epic”, or a suite of artist’s short films one after the other.

This program of short silent films focuses on some different ways in which artists have explored spatiotemporal dimensions of cinema and the pictorial.  By employing or embracing systems of organization, these five films create a rich interplay between order and chaos, inviting the energy and materiality of the physical realm to challenge their attempts to order it.

  • The Dream That Kicks presents Here Is Information. Mobilise

    By on

A screening/performance and book launch inspired by the late artist and curator Ian White (1971-2013).
White was an influential curator of artists’ film, particularly through his work for the Whitechapel Gallery, LUX and the Oberhausen Short Film Festival. This event brings together three artists who were important to White and whose work deals directly with the idea that the cinema auditorium is a space where films are performed or produced, rather than simply projected.

  • Show & Tell: Shambhavi Kaul

    By on

Born in Jodhpur, India, Shambhavi Kaul lives in the U.S. where she teaches filmmaking at Duke University. As skillful with found footage as with her own gorgeous landscape cinematography and hand-processed 16mm, Kaul’s films are marked by a distinctly pensive but playful character. Kaul’s cinematic constructions conjure uncanny, science-fictive non-places. They present to us other worlds – our natural world becomes surreal, familiar set pieces and settings in found-footage films are revealed to be hollow and eerie, hints of narrative threads appear and recede.

    Dates:

    Saturday, April 8, 2017 - 19:30
