  • Life Without Buildings: S8 Films by Steve Polta

    By on

Co-programmed by The Chicago 8 Small Gauge Film Festival & The Nightingale

“Bay Area artist Steve Polta has been producing a body of films, mostly on Super 8, over the past two decades that are as exquisitely nuanced as they are rarely seen. Each film presents a narrow window onto the ordinary world, prodded by subtle observation until it yields images of ethereal beauty.” (Rick Bahto: Echo Park Film Center)

Punchuncavi (2015) takes us to a former native American site in Valparaíso, Chile, now host to copper refineries, steam power plants and a lading port.

  • Invocations of the Luminiferous Æther: Expanded cinema - Paul Clipson + Brendan Murray & Magical Approach

    By on

Balagan is pleased to present – along with Ricardo De Lima and the ICA, Boston – a program of two expanded cinema performances that challenge the perception of film as a static and unchanging medium or mere document of past artistic efforts. By introducing chance elements, both in the filming and the exhibition (which pairs live improvised sound to multi-layered 16mm projections), the performers draft the audience into the role of active participants; Unexpected mental connections are drawn between the disparate elements, mined from the depths of our collective unconscious and manifested as veritable waking dreams.

    Dates:

    Saturday, July 11, 2015 - 12:00 to Sunday, July 12, 2015 - 11:55

    Venue:

  • 8X8: Barbara Sternberg

    By on

8X8 is a new initiative from The 8 Fest, Toronto’s small-gauge film festival, to do year-round programming in support of our annual festival. 8 films for $8!

In the films of Barbara Sternberg, the artist’s material inquiries manifest alongside social concerns around perception and reality. The figure, the landscape, and the memorial inscription are made archetypal and mythic. Since the mid-1970s, Sternberg has worked across media in her studies of these themes, often in super 8 and 16mm film as well as video, and her 2011 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts is only one of many achievements for her artistic work, alongside which her work as a teacher and curator had a significant impact on the Toronto film and media arts community for the past three decades. The 8 fest is proud to present this rare opportunity to see Barbara Sternberg’s early works, including several not in distribution, alongside a number of her more recent films, all in the context of small gauge film, a material that she has used in exhibition and in her process since her earliest films.

  • Ute Aurand: Eye Movement Stillness

    By on

Ute Aurand’s diary films, film portraits, and travelogues belong to the lineage of Jonas Mekas, Marie Menken and Margaret Tait. A key figure in Berlin’s film scene since the 1980s, Aurand records life’s small, ephemeral details on a handheld Bolex camera, later reworking them in a style that is at once energetic, rhythmic, playful and — unusually for experimental cinema — tender. She has described her approach as “a brief touch” — “like a swing, to go away and come back and go away and come back again.” Her films explore the lives of friends and strangers, the atmosphere of local and foreign places, and “the absolutely singular, exquisite textures of daily life around her” (Michael Sicinski).

  • A Mirror Avant-Garde: Non-Canonical Canonicals By Women Filmmakers

    By on

"If you’ve seen more than three of the films in this program, I’d be surprised. Yet every single one of these films by women filmmakers, chosen from the collection of the Filmmaker’s Co-op, deserves to be written about, taught in classes, and be part of the canon of avant-garde film. In a program of striking artistic voices from filmmakers with large bodies of work, you’ll see resonances with the films of Jack Smith, Carolee Schneeman, Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, Owen Land, Hollis Frampton, Barbara Rubin, Malcolm LeGrice, and many others."

  • Collapsible Landscapes: The Work of Sabrina Ratté and Le Révélateur

    By on

Pleasure Dome and The Drake Hotel are pleased to present a curated selection of Sabrina Ratté’s video works followed by a live performance by Le Révélateur, making their Toronto debut. Since 2009, Montréal artist Sabrina Ratté has been meticulously crafting and dismantling entire worlds. Wedding the boundary-pushing exploration of early computer art with the boundlessness of natural vistas, Ratté’s work approaches the digital sublime through the lens of media archaeology, building and blurring landscapes with the grace of a neon Turner or Friedrich.
