Slow Short Film Festival 2018 [1]
The Slow Short Film Festival celebrates work engaging with a stylistic tendency grown conspicuous in the past three decades of world art cinema. Very broadly this style consists of long takes, long shots, a focus on non-professional actors, and an emphasis on everyday activities deemed surplus to mainstream storytelling. Leading figures include Béla Tarr, Tsai Ming-Liang, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Abbas Kiarostami, Lav Diaz, Pedro Costa and Ben Rivers.
Emerging during a period of rapid social and technological change, slow cinema resists the culture of instant gratification and proposes moments of stillness and substance. By exhibiting examples of slow cinema under forty-five minutes in length, we aim to represent emerging filmmakers who as yet do not have the confidence or support to make feature-length work, and we seek to encourage and enable their future projects.
