In the first of a two-part program on Iranian experimental cinema, guest programmer Somayeh Khakshoor presents rarely seen short works by pioneering filmmakers Manouchehr Tayyab, Khosrow Sinai, Farshad Fadaian, and Mohammad Reza Aslani (whose feature Chess of the Wind had a held-over run at The Cinematheque earlier this year). Although all these films, with the exception of Ars Poetica, were either commissioned or made within governmental institutions, their makers found creative ways not to compromise their radical artistic inclinations.
Transient Visions: Festival of the Moving Image was established in 2013. It celebrates the cutting edge art of the moving image through screenings, exhibitions, performances, and other festival events, providing a cultural experience that enriches the local community. The Festival works as a venue to meet artists in this region and beyond, exchanging and sharing ideas, while developing mutual relationship.
Witness this new batch of wild, weird, transgressive and experimental short films by the new wave of underground filmmakers. The emotions range from funny to touching to creepy, and each film rejects convention in it's own way. Come to LA's Arts District to find out what's been brewing in Hollywood's dark dark shadow.
VISIONS, in collaboration with Main Film, presents THE AFTERLIGHT by Charlie Shackleton, a film that itself exists as a single 35mm film print. Further eroding every time it screens, the film is a living document of its life in circulation. Eventually it will disappear entirely.

Due to their opposing characteristics, light and dark have been employed throughout the history of filmmaking to create shadow and visual effects. However, the visual characteristics of “black” often make us “blind” to it. From a re-exploration of the development of filmmaking techniques, there is ubiquitous use of black in film production and screening, from the effects of metallic silver grains to the evolution of formal film language and the arrangement of screening spaces.
