The opening stanza of Derek Walcott's Names slices through waves breaking on the windward side of Barbados, the landing point for the first black slave society: “A sea eagle screams from the rock, and my race began like the osprey, with that cry, that terrible vowel, that I.” Travelling inland from the shore, the narrator of Helen Cammock's essay film—always speaking in the first person, whether as herself or as the embodiment of other voices (from writers to emigrants)—searches for the last vestiges of the sugar trade, a colonial project in freefall.
Presented as part of Chicago Filmmakers’ special series of 50th Anniversary retrospective programming.
Chicago Filmmakers’ PerforMedia programming originated in the 1980’s as the groundbreaking “Time Arts” series. By bringing together artists across an eclectic spectrum of genres and disciplines, including film, video, music, performance art/theater, and poetry — converged or in tandem, this historic series helped to bring a new, broader audience to Chicago Filmmakers.
For the fourth consecutive year, the OBSKURA festival is launching its call for entries !
The festival will be held between the 3rd to 7th of July 2024 at the Théâtre National de Bretagne and La Parcheminerie, in Rennes, France.
We wish to show films that elude common framework, play to our senses and reimagine reality through their formal expression. OBSKURA also explores other perceptions and narratives with film performances.
We are looking forward to your film proposals with enthusiasm !
