    Tucked away in the village of Alfred in rural western New York, the experimental film and media arts festival Light Matter has become “a major East Coast showcase for experimental film and video” in three short years.  Spurred by a desire to bring together the often disconnected worlds of Film and Media Arts, curator James Hansen constructs thoughtful, eccentric programs that seek to create conversation between individual works, showcasing both emerging and established artists....

  • Possible Cartographies: Valentina Alvarado Matos & Carlos Vásquez Méndez

    Valentina Alvarado Matos is a Venezuelan artist whose practice involves collage, film, and sculpture. In her films, the combination of manual actions carried out in front of the camera and poetic associations between words and images produce a reflection on the representation of landscape and memory. The films presented here combine play and correspondences of images with processes referring in turn to notions of diaspora, language, and ecology.

  • AD HOC #55: Seven Films by Ed Emshwiller

    Ed Emshwiller began his career as an illustrator of science-fiction books and magazines. In this field his covers were distinct for their realist figuration and bright colours. Emshwiller had studied painting in France under the G.I. Bill, and on returning to America became involved in abstract expressionism. His work in commercial illustration maintained his training in conventional realism, placing vivid, photo-realistic figures into fantastical realms and situations, even as he was otherwise drawn to the possibilities for form to transcend subject.

    The Birley are delighted to present a screening of key works by Lynn Loo, selected from decades of experimentation and sustained engagement with sound and moving image. Since 2005, She has been collaborating with Guy Sherwin in numerous film performances and projects. Her films have been included in numerous international festivals and galleries. Some of her works are in the collection of Asian Film Archive in Singapore and recently in He Xiangning Art Museum in China.

    el otro aquí is a project structured around our personal memory, marked by distance and that from which we have distanced ourselves. Far from our affective environments and formative landscapes, to inhabit new spaces and meanings arising from other traditions; those of the here, where we have settled, with discontinuous returns to our origins. Based on this personal reflection, the installation appeals to universal memory and its ductile quality emerging in the impossibility of its completeness, in what is missing: in a displaced but latent memory.
