Closed Captions (CC) provides on-screen text descriptions of dialogue and sound design for non-auditory viewers, while Audio Description (AD) enables blind and low-vision moviegoers to hear descriptions of film images and actions. In Emerson College's "Accessible Cinema" course, students will create CC and AD for short films by established filmmakers.

If you are a filmmaker with a finished short film (9-13 minutes) and would like to work with a student who will create CC and AD for your film, please fill out this form before 10am EST on January 8, 2022.

Film requirements:

  • Any genre of film. (Experimental/boundary-pushing films encouraged. Feminist/anti-racist/queer films encouraged. Misogynist/racist/homophobic films will not be accepted.)
  • Be an established filmmaker. (Have had your film(s) screened in festivals, etc..)
  • 9-13 minutes total running time.
  • Must have dynamic sound design. (No music videos. With or without dialogue is okay.)
  • Film must be in English.
  • Film must be finished.

Requirements for filmmakers:

  • Commit to using the CC and AD professionally.
  • Agree to be professional with students.
  • Can't be a student.
  • Email a digital copy of your film by January 10, 2022.
  • 15 minute, in-progress meeting with the student via Zoom, March 3 - 13, 2022.
  • Provide a short evaluation between March 21 - 28, 2022.

Upon successful completion of the assignment by the student, each filmmaker will get:

  • A CC file.
  • An AD audio file.
  • No payment exchanged.

Selection process:

  • Round 1: Malic will choose approximately 20 films.
  • Round 2: Students will then choose one film to work with for the semester.

This program and course is organized by Malic Amalya, Assistant Professor of 16mm Filmmaking and Experimental Media at Emerson College.
