SEEKING ALTERNATIVE SHORT FILMS

Take Your Medicine and Smile Productions is looking for Southern California filmmakers who are actively making short films to include in an alternative and experimental film exposition in Los Angeles.

Dates are still unknown, but we will hopefully make it happen late this year, and we are making a plan to ensure it will be safe. Online will be a last resort if all else fails.

CRITERIA:

Films must be lo-fi. Low end cameras only.

Acceptable cameras: Phones, web cams, VHS cameras, Handycams, 8mm film, Digital 8mm cameras, all the crappiest consumer cameras. If you’ve shot on a camera that isn’t listed, shoot us a message.

Not acceptable cameras and film: RED, ARRI, DSLR, BLACKMAGIC, SONY A7S, 35mm, 16mm, all that fancy B.S.

Films must be highly unconventional.

Non-narrative films and surrealist films are especially welcome. Narrative films should be highly bizarre, or weirdly structured (nonlinear is not weird enough). If in doubt, you might as well send it since submission is free.

We are not accepting animation at this time.

Films must be less than 15 minutes including credits.

Must have at least two films to submit.

Filmmaker must be based in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Submission:

To submit, send a Youtube or Vimeo link to two of your films to [email protected] by October 1st.

If you want a sense of what sorts of things we like here are some filmmakers who’s stuff would totally be accepted if they hadn’t shot them on their stupid fancy cameras (and some who actually would be accepted):

Harmony Korine (especially Trash Humpers)

David Lynch (especially his shorts and Inland Empire)

Fabrizio Frederico

Athina Tsangari

Stan Brakhage

Derek Jarman

Terrence Malick

Jan Svankmejer

Hollis Frampton
