WORM.Filmwerkplaats brings to Filmhuis Cavia the Berlin based artists Deborah S. Phillips and Klara Ravat. Both work with a variety of media, but their common ground is 16mm filmmaking. The Scent of Colour encompasses recent and early works - 16mm films and expanded cinema performances. Phillips’ research descends deeply into the essence of the colours red, blue and green, explored through their chemical, linguistic and musical properties, while Ravat’s work focusses on the sense of smell as research, creating media and odour artworks combined with analogue filmmaking.

A Q&A with the artists will follow the screening.

DEBORAH S. PHILLIPS is a Berlin-based visual artist who has been working in a variety of analogue media including 16mm film, slide collages, works-on- paper, installations, performances and handmade books for more than 25 years. Her work often involves in-depth explorations of a theme, such as architectural ornament or monochromes over the course of years. Her series dedicated to 3 colours of light will be completed, after 12 years, by March 2017. She has presented her work at Arsenal (Berlin, GE), Lightcone (Paris, FR), Fajr Festival Teheran (Iran), Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen (GE), Toronto International Film Festival (CA), L'Alternativa Barcelona (ES) Anthology Film Archives, and Millennium Film Workshop (NY), Women Make Waves Taipei (TW) and the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück, (GE) among others.

KLARA RAVAT creates media and odour artworks, installations and experimental films. By opposing the divisionbetween the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Ravat absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. This personal follow-up and revival of a past habit is important as an act of reflection. By investigating the concept of landscape in an adventurous and exploratory way, she wants to amplify the wonderment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of alienation and recognition. Her works appear as dreamlike images, often accompanied by scent, in which fiction and reality meet, meanings shift, past and present fuse. For the past years Ravat has been developing works related to the sense of smell as a research on how do we perceive through this sense. Klara Ravat currently lives and works in Berlin.
