For the fourth month of our WORKS IN PROGRESS series, Iris Film Collective member Alex MacKenzie will be continuing work on his long form expanded cinema performance THE HOLLOW MOUNTAIN, a landscape film of topography, contours, and nature in abstraction. A disassembled 35mm film viewer is modified to manually project, creating an arresting arrhythmic flicker colourfield further transformed through lens interference. This work was created on a 35mm handcranked camera as well as by using a number of non-camera techniques, with all processing and printing done by hand.

This month of processing and exploring the shape of the work will result in a completed performance to premiere later this year.

Open House February 16, 4-6pm
Window Screening February 20, 6-7pm
Burrard View Fieldhouse 545 N Slocan Street

On Sunday February 16 from 4 to 6pm, Alex will feature an Open House where the public is welcome to have a look at the work he is doing at the Fieldhouse, while on Thursday February 20 from 6-7pm some of these materials will be projected on the exterior window of the Fieldhouse for passers-by to view at leisure.

Iris Film Collective’s WORK IN PROGRESS series is a month-long residency at the Burrard View Fieldhouse featuring a different Iris Film Collective member each month who will be using the space to work on their individual projects. The public is invited to pop by while they are working; as well, some days/evenings in the month are devoted to public events. This is a great opportunity to meet the artists and see what they are up to, as well as to visit the Fieldhouse and check out our setup!

Alex MacKenzie is a Vancouver-based media artist working primarily with analog film equipment and hand processed imagery. He creates works of expanded cinema, light projection installation, and projector performance. His work has screened at festivals, underground venues and art spaces worldwide.  www.alexmackenzie.ca
