The Video-on-Demand platform ViridianaTV dedicates a retrospective of Russia's most avant-garde and experimental film director, Dmitri Frolov, with films produced between 1987 and 2017.

This retrospective can be enjoyed from 6 to 27 August at www.viridiana.tv.

Dmitri Frolov was born in Leningrad in 1966.

He had his first contact with cinema thanks to his father's camera "Quartz 2 X Super 8". He started shooting his own films before the beginning of perestroika, with his inseparable Kranosgorsk K-3 hand-held camera. One of his first films, The Battle of Borodino, caused a furor and largely determined the development of the folkloric trend in post-Soviet cinema. He is one of the leaders of the Russian film avant-garde in the post-perestroika era. His film The Ghosts of White Nights is considered the last film shot before the fall of the USSR. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute in 1990. He worked at the LENFILM studios and later at the STV film company as a camera operator and photographer, a position in which he has collaborated with many independent filmmakers.

His predilection for the almost exclusive use of "Svema" emulsion. Although it has been discontinued, he remains faithful to the brand, when asked why, he replies that only "Svema" because of its unpredictability and non-uniformity of the emulsion, is a "living" material, which is able to convey the emotion of the character of life and even of a seemingly inanimate object.
