The Festival du nouveau cine´ma (FNC) has been shining the spotlight on experimental cinema for over 40 years. Werner Schroeter was our guest in the ’70s, and in 2013 the Festival awarded a Louve d’honneur to renowned experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas. The FNC continues its mission of showcasing hybrid works using experimental, expanded and multi-disciplinary cinematic forms. The FNC Lab section, where these innovative practices take centre stage, features a series of much-awaited events that uphold the experimental genre, in which artists and filmmakers call on a variety of techniques to make audiences question and reflect on the fundamental identity of cinema in order to propel it forward.

In the FNC Lab film competition, 25 films are presented in the short film category. Some of the biggest names in experimental film are here, including Alexandre Larose, Vincent Grenier, Matias Meyer, Kazik Radwanski, Steven Woloshen, Philip Hoffman and Mike Hoolboom. Six films are in competition in the feature film category. Among them are Journey to The West by Tsai Ming Liang, the latest by Isabelle Prim as well as Wilhelm Sasnal and Anka Sasnal, and, opening the section, the world premiere of Transatlantique by Félix Dufour-Laperrière. On Thursday, October 9 at 8 p.m., observe and share the daily lives of a cargo ship crew and get a glimpse of some of the hidden beauty of this capricious maritime reality.

The art of found footage, but most importantly, the thousand-and-one ways to bring archives, memories and memorial artifacts to life. A thousand-and-one ways to make today speak of yesterday and yesterday of today. Brilliant essays that create bridges and displacement in time and space. Fascinating.
