The 2021 edition of Courtisane Festival (October 20-24 Ghent. Belgium) will feature as its artists in focus Sandra Lahire, a central member of the feminist and experimental filmmaking community in London in the 1980s and 1990s; and Swedish documentarians C.W. Winter & Anders Edström. As in previous editions, the filmmakers will present several monographic programmes of their work as well as curate other carte blanche programmes in affinity.
The Selection strand consists of seventeen programs of recent and rediscovered works by Sky Hopinka, Lisa Spilliaert, Frederick Wiseman, Ana Hjort Guttu, James N. Kienitz Wilkins, Ann Oren, Diego Marcon, Silvia das Fadas, Sumiko Haneda, Elke Marhöfer, Rosine Mbakam, Graeme Armfield, Margarita Maximova, Stefan Kruse Jørgensen, Ephraim Asili, Elie Maissin & Mieriën Coppens, Konstantin Lopushansky, Éric Baudelaire, Kevin Jerome Everson, Laida Lertxundi, Chick Strand, Elettra Bisogno & Hazem Alqaddi, Mouaad el Salem, Maya Deren, Adrian Paci, Bea Haut, Eva Giolo, Margaret Salmon and Chantal Akerman.
The retrospective 'Out of the Shadows' will explore the cinematic history of the Arab Mediterranean through the work of four female filmmakers 'whose films remain overlooked and underscreened': Atteyat Al-Abnoudy, Assia Djebar, Jocelyne Saab, and Heiny Srour.
