A program of short experimental films that radically explore the cosmology and poetics of breath in cinema. It features works by Louise Bourque, Peter Rose, Matt Whitman, Lynn Marie Kirby, Sandeep Ashwath, Lei Lei & Thomas Nauman, Stephanie Barber, Karel Doing, Jason Livingston, Ja'tovia Gary and Anna Kipervaser. Cinema of Breath is a screening series founded by Kalpana Subramanian a media arts scholar-practitioner and doctoral candidate at the State university of New York at Buffalo.

Program notes

 

Cinema of Breath is a screening series founded by Kalpana Subramanian based on her doctoral research and experimental media praxis.

Kalpana Subramanian is an artist-filmmaker and doctoral candidate in Media Study at the University at Buffalo. Her research investigates the poetics of breath in film and media using a trans-cultural, interdisciplinary and practice-based framework of inquiry. She is a recipient of the Humanities Institute PhD Fellowship 2022-23. In 2015-16 she was Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellow at University of Colorado Boulder in 2015-16 and a UK Environmental Film Fellow in 2006.

Her films have been screened at several venues including the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Interfilm Berlin, Toronto International Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, Antimatter Media Arts (Canada) and Flaherty NYC Seminar among others. She received the Audience Award at the Documentary Festival of History and Archeology in Italy (2015) and awards for Creative Approach and Cinematography (2003) aswell as Merit Award for Conservation (2005) at the Montana CINE International Film Festival. She has curated experimental film programs which have been presented at venues including the Alternative cinema series (Colgate University) and Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF).
