About the book:Claes Söderquist (b. 1939 in Stockholm) educated artist and later filmmaker, teacher, curator, art consultant and long-term driving force and chairman of the Filmform Foundation (1992–2012). Söderquist has been active as an experimental filmmaker since the early 1960s. He has described how the new experimental film took him by surprise in connection with the film screenings made for the exhibition 4 Americans in 1962 and during a touring film program with New American Cinema in 1964, both at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

As he put it, filmmakers such as Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol and Stan Brakhage created "fantastic, visionary films beyond the commercial feature film and all the conventions that govern our film-viewing." These impressions certainly also contributed to the courage to start working with film myself. The book about Söderquist has grown through many years of conversations and collaborations, which have also led to us editors curating screenings of his films both nationally and internationally. A shared interest in the history of experimental film, where Söderquist's own films make a contribution that is unusual in a Swedish context, has led us to discuss his work in a larger international context. Here, too, his efforts as curator of extensive film screening series both in Sweden and abroad have been important.

The book consists of an introduction, two interviews and texts by Nicky Hamlyn, Chris Kennedy, Masha Matzke, Els van Riel and Astrid Söderbergh Widding. It also contains extensive visual material.

The screening is arranged by the book's editors Daniel A. Swarthnas and Martin Grennberger in collaboration with Filmform. With thanks to Zita Folkets Bio and Taverna Brillo.
