  • From Ecstasy to Rapture Program 2: Appropriations / Grand Super-8

    By on

This program – which encompasses a selection of pieces shot in Super-8mm, as well as a group of found-footage films – establishes a dialogue between filmmakers from separate generations: those who formed part of the avant-garde film movement in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia in the 1970s (led by Eugeni Bonet, Juan Bufill, Manuel Huerga, and Eug?nia Balcells) and those active from the late-90s on.

The opening program includes work by José Val del Omar, visionary filmmaker and inventor; the architect Gabriel Blanco, best known as an animator but represented here with a documentary film portraying the daily chores of a Spanish citizen on a typical Sunday in the suburbs; multidisciplinary artists Benet Rossell and Antoni Miralda; José Luis Guerin, whose feature film, IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA, recently had a theatrical run here at Anthology; and Virginia García del Pino.

  • Short Cuts V: Resilient Structures

Block B (Chris Chong Chan-Fui, 2008)Short Cuts V: Resilient Structures
    Thursday February 25, at 6pm
    Northwest Film Center
Whitsell Auditorium, 1219 SW Park Avenue, 97205 Portland, OR, USA
Co-Presented with the Northwest Film Center

For the 2010 Portland International Film Festival Cinema Project brings a selection of contemporary film and video from Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Focusing on natural and man-made structures and the spaces in-between, each of these works reveals a variety of dynamic relations from frame to space and from history to environment. Daichi Saito’s entirely hand-processed film Trees of Syntax, Leaves of Axis examines the natural language of a familiar Canadian landscape while Chris Chong Chan Fui’s modernist exchange on public and private space in Block B presents a surprisingly telling view of an apartment block in Kuala Lumpur. From Tomonari Nishikawa is Lumphini 2552, black-and-white images of plants and trees shot using a 35mm still camera at Bangkok’s Lumphini Park. The result is a surprisingly emotional construction of rhythm and movement. And from Shiho Kano's Shinonome Omogo Ishizuchi is a transcendental travelogue inspired by filmmaker Mansaku Itami. Finally, Taiwanese filmmaker Chen Chieh-Jen’s Empire's Borders I examines the process that Taiwanese citizens endure when applying for a United States visa.

Tickets - $7, available at door.
    Curated by Ben Rivers

Artist Ben Rivers presents a double-bill featuring films by Jeff Keen--hero of British underground cinema--and dreamy Bela Lugosi vehicle White Zombie, described by Keen as "possibly the most beautiful film ever."

Not long after we started Brighton Cinematheque in 1996, we came across long-term Brightonian Jeff Keen - and after that we used to do at least one show with him a year - explosive shows where he would set up as many projectors as possible, so by the end of the night we would be running an incredible number of super-8, 16mm, and whatever else projectors simultaneously, spilling way over the Cinemascope screen in a cacophonous dirge of white noise and image. I love Jeff Keen - he's a film wizard! - BR

    Saturday March 13th, 2010, 12-22h
    Video Pool Studio
    100 Arthur St
    Winnipeg, MB, Canada

In September 2009, I was fortunate enough to have downloaded a copy of Anders Weberg's 090909.

090909 is a 9 hour, 9 minute and 9 second long audio visual excursion made as part of Weberg's p2p art project*. The film and all the files used to create it were deleted on 09/09/2009.

Come join us at Video Pool for the screening of 090909 in its entirety. Feel free to stay for as long or as little as you like. At the end of the screening, I will be deleting the file from my computer and thus will possibly be deleting the last available copy of this film forever.

*p2p art is art made for - and only available on - peer to peer networks. The original artwork is first shared by the artist until one other user has downloaded it. After that the artwork is available for as long as other users share it.

    Friday 26th February 2010, 19h
    Bistrot
116 avenue René Coty, 76600 Le Havre, France
In the presence of Yves-Marie Mahé

This programme in two parts presents a selection of videos by young artists (filmmakers and videomakers) who all of them work from existing material: found-footage, archives, images of all kinds and all backgrounds.

Here, the practice of recycling, of reappropriation, of reuse is both an artistic gesture (creating a new meaning from two juxtaposed elements), social criticism, ability to retrieve data (Internet) and economic constraints (it is a 'practice poor' of cinema as Y.-M. Mahe said in his interview).
