Punto de Vista 2019

La edición de este año de Punto de Vista, Festival de Cine Documental de Navarra (11 a 16 de marzo, Pamplona) presenta en su nueva edición un programa con fuerte presencia de películas de vanguardia. Uno de los principales protagonistas de esta edición será el recientemente desaparecido Jonathan Schwartz, con una retrospectiva dedicada a su obra así como la publicación del libro 'To light, to love, to time: Jonathan Schwartz'.

Over the past 15 years, British artist, filmmaker and musician Luke Fowler has developed a practice that is, at the same time, singular and collaborative, poetic and political, structural and documentary, archival and deeply human. With an emphasis on communities of people, outward thinkers and the history of the left, his 16mm films tell the stories of alternative movements in Britain, from psychiatry to photography to music to education.

La edición de 2017 del Festival Courtisane (29 de marzo al 2 de abril en Gante, Bélgica) tendrá como 'Artists in focus' a dos figuras tan diferentes como esenciales del cine alemán: las del documentalista Peter Nestler y la cineasta experimental Ute Aurand.

Robert Beavers
In a career spanning five decades, Robert Beavers has distinguished himself as one of the most important American avant-garde filmmakers. From My Hand Outstretched to the Winged Distance and Sightless Measure, his cycle of 18 films made across Europe since 1967, to Pitcher of Colored Light (2007) and The Suppliant (2010), intimate portraits shot in the U.S., Beavers has produced a deeply original film language framed by his use of colored filters and mattes.

Courtisane Festival 2016

The fifteenth edition of Courtisane Festival (March 23-27, Ghent, Belgium) focuses on the figures of Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi and the Scottish artist, filmmaker and musician Luke Fowler, protagonists of its 'Artists in focus' section. Each filmmaker will be the protagonist of a series of different events including partial retrospectives of their work, talks, and in the case of Fowler, a musical performance with Richard Youngs and Markus Schmickler.

Courtisane Festival 2015

Just two days more until the beginning of the 2015 Courtisane Festival (April 1-5, Ghent, Belgium). Now in its fourteenth year, the festival keeps a solid programme as ever with their 'Artists in focus' section, dedicated to Thom Andersen and Pedro Costa. Each filmmaker will be the protagonist of a series of different events including screenings of their work, masterclasses and carte blanches.

The festival will also present a selection of over 50 films from the L.A. Rebellion movement, including works by Charles Burnett, Haile Gerima, Larry Clark and Billy Woodberry. The Selection strand will feature films and videos by Basma Alsharif, Mary Helena Clark, Beatrice Gibson, Ernie Gehr, Morgan Fisher, Ute Aurand and Luke Fowler, among many others.

Basel, 23 & 24 April 2015

Basel University, eikones Forum and Stadkino Basel will host Film as Film: Theory and Practice in the Work of Gregory J. Markopoulos on 23 & 24 April 2015. This symposium and screening series is the first of its kind to be focused on Markopoulos, and will bring together many of the most knowledgeable individuals interested in his work. This event is open to the public.

The Greek-American filmmaker Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928–1992) was one of the key figures in the development of postwar avant-garde film, and a co-founder of the New American Cinema Group. In his exquisitely stylized and dreamlike early films, and in the stunning works of the sixties and seventies, Markopoulos formulated a maverick aesthetic characterized by incomparable formal rigor, fascinating beauty, and the penetrating representation of interior worlds that emerge from the entwinement of image and sound into an ecstatic filmic language.

A lyrical collage of film about R.D. Laing completed in 2011. Using footage from the Flat Time House archive amongst multiple other sources, Luke Fowler's film focuses on one of the key characters in the history of Better Books.

The film concentrates on archival representations of radical psychiatrist RD Laing and his colleagues as they struggled to acknowledge the importance of considering social environment and disturbed interaction in institutions as significant factors in the aetiology of human distress and suffering. RD Laing was associated with the art and poetry gatherings at Better Books and his controversial psychiatric writings and methods considerably influenced the creative practices of the artists involved at Better Books. All Divided Selves reprises the vacillating responses to these radical views and the less forgiving responses to Laing's latter career shift; from eminent psychiatrist to enterprising celebrity. A dense, engaging and lyrical collage- Fowler weaves archival material with his own filmic observations including footage from a SIGMA gathering with John Latham and others at Brazier's Park in 1964.
