    Slides by Annabel Nicolson and Girish Shambu’s manifesto For a New Cinephilia are used as starting points from which to construct Movement and Handling, Selected Works from the LUX Collection. Nicolson’s fascination with fragments of older films and the transience of construction suggests a link with Shambu’s new cinephilia – a transient place between online and real-life.

    "Alongside the commercial cinema of narrative and spectacle there has always been another practice--call it avant-garde, experimental, or artists' film. In this provocative book, Nicky Hamlyn, an acclaimed filmmaker in the alternative tradition, investigates the film art phenomenon. Taking cues from modern trends in other artforms, notably painting and sculpture, this type of filmmaking emphasizes the nature of its apparatus and medium in order to bring about a critical, inquisitive state of mind in the viewer.

    For the third year running the BFI Filmstore teams up with Filmarmalade to celebrate their 2011 DVD series. Filmarmalade is a publisher and DVD label specialising in contemporary artists' film and video works. The Filmstore is proud to host the launch of Filmarmalade's latest batch: Mirza/Butler's The Exception and the Rule, Miranda Pennell's Why Colonel Bunny Was Killed and the world premiere screening of Adam Roberts' latest film Remake. The screening will be introduced by Gordon Shrigley from Filmarmalade and we hope to have all the artists present on the night.
