    Anthology Film Archives and Screen Slate co-presenting the premiere of Ken Jacobs "MOVIE THAT INVITES PAUSING".

    In addition to MOVIE... (24 min), they will also screen "Things to Come" (35 min), with a pre-show of recent Eternalism gifs. Afterwards, Ken will be joined by Anthology archivist John Klacsmann for a live chat.

    The latest film from acclaimed San Francisco-based filmmaker, writer, curator, and LGBT film historian Jenni Olson, The Royal Road is a beautifully structured, multi-faceted essay film that offers up a primer on Junipero Serra’s Spanish colonization of California and the Mexican American War alongside intimate reflections on nostalgia, butch identity, the quest for unattainable women, and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo – all against a contemplative backdrop of 16mm urban California landscapes, and featuring a voiceover cameo by Tony Kushner. Freely mixing personal and historical meditations, and allowing the two to amplify each other without necessarily making the connections explicit, The Royal Road is a film of ideas that is also a pleasure to look at and listen to.

    As the 3-D craze continues to sweep through our nation’s multiplexes, we here at Anthology have seen fit to focus attention on an artist – one of the giants of avant-garde cinema – who has been exploring the possibilities of three-dimensional filmmaking since long before Hollywood dusted the process off and rebooted it for the purposes of high-powered distraction. Ken Jacobs’s experiments with the possibilities of illusionary depth stretch all the way back to the late 1960s, and in the last decade he has devoted himself to exploring the phenomenon, creating dozens of moving-image works, both shorts and features, that utilize various methods of producing three-dimensional effects. Standing in stark contrast to Hollywood’s efforts to squeeze some (any) kind of response out of jaded moviegoers benumbed by decades of big-budget spectacles, Jacobs’s profound fascination with the idea of filmic depth speaks to a commitment to expand our senses and our conception of the movie-watching experience – a conviction that the cinema can foster expanded perception, not just sensation.

    This series offers a very rare chance to experience an exhilarating variety of Ken Jacobs’s utterly original 3-D work. Featuring three nights of live Nervous Magic Lantern performances, a revival of a 35mm slide-based piece from the mid-1980s, and a host of short and feature-length 3-D pieces from throughout his career, these shows will survey a body of work which forms a conception of 3-D filmmaking undreamed of in the multiplexes!

    YOU ARE HERE is an essayistic film that examines the search for home in an era of transnational displacement. As the son of immigrants, the filmmaker reflects on the shifting notions of home and belonging within the context of his ethnic origins, but also extends this into the realm of national and sexual identities and affiliations. The film chronicles his trajectory from his ancestral home in Italy, to his native Canada and beyond, and weaves a compelling and contemporary portrait shaped by memories of the past and the realities of the present.

    John Di Stefano is a visual artist, filmmaker, writer and curator, and postgraduate coordinator at the National Art School (Sydney). His artistic practice is situated at the intersection between the moving image, photography and installation. His video work has won several awards, including the New Vision Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival for his video (TELL ME WHY) THE EPISTEMOLOGY OF DISCO, which has also been broadcast on American public television (PBS). His video HUB was cited as one of the 'best of the year' by Artforum (New York) in its yearly international survey. He writes for international art and film publications and is presently the New Zealand editor for Art Asia Pacific (New York).
