Experimental filmmaker.
Born in 1982, Japan.

I started making moving image with 16mm film in 2006.

My theme is to instigate changes in perception by coming and going across the border of images while extracting film's materiality.

The works have been screened at many film festivals, including International Film Festival Rotterdam.

    Is it possible to perceive the same moment from different perspectives?

    "Sound Screening" explores expansion of visual and auditory sensation. Philip Widmann presents his 3 films in person, who makes original worlds by experimental and documentary technique. The works include latest film which got a deep response all over the world.  The film title Fictitious Force means physical force which we can't feel from the outside of a system, it refers to impossibility of sharing experiences. Moreover, Shinkan Tamaki shows his new performance which develops optical experiments at hand, and biki & Satoshi Kanda duo will construct space by setting objects and phenomena.

    On the Invention of the Wheel (Richard Touhy, 2015)

    "Sound Screening" explores expansion of visual and auditory sensation. This time we have Richard Tuohy's first screening and performance in Japan. Richard is Australian film maestro who makes abstract experimental film with his enormous knowledge and advanced technique. Moreover, a solitary sound artist, Keitetsu Murai will show a sound from mutual interference of 4 oscillators which react to candle flame. And Shinkan Tamaki will show "Passages" which captured shapes of winds.

  • (S8) 5a Mostra de Cinema Periférico

    La próxima edición de la (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (4 al 8 de junio en A Coruña) tendrá como protagonista fundamental al cine experimental japonés. El renombrado artista y cineasta Takahiko Iimura será su representante más destacado, con un programa dedicado a su obra, una performance en directo y la video-instalación As I See You See Me. El programa también inclute proyecciones del cineasta superochista Teruo Koike y de los miebros del colectivo [+] Makino Takashi, Shinkan Tamaki y Rei Hayama. 'Through a Rearview Mirror: Japanese Experimental Films Revisited' es el título de la retrospectiva comisariada por el fundador del Doble Negative Collective Daïchi Saïto, quien además presentará un programa de sus películas.

    El festival Media City será invitado especial este año, y sus directores y prgoramadores Jeremy Rigsby y Oona Mosna presentarán una selección de películas que cubren los veinte años de vida de este veterano festival. Además, la creciente sección de cine expandido se completará con performances de Esperanza Collado, Makino Takashi y el Colectivo Cráter.

    Experimental film screening and performance from Japan. Shinkan Tamaki from Japan will perform and present the screening programme in person!

    Film Screening:

    - Experience in Material No.51: DUBHOUSE (Kei Shichiri & Ryoji Suzuki, 16min, 2012)A documentary that focuses on an installation called "Experience in Material No.51: DUBHOUSE" by architect Ryoji SUZUKI at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 2010. Its original concept of capturing the darkness produced by architecture was dramatically altered by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11th, 2011. SHICHIRI begins by filming both the light and shadows produced by the works on display, and embeds SUZUKI’s drawings of the disaster-hit regions within them. Cinemas are architectural structures where darkness is inherent. Films that attempt to emerge from that darkness are a form of emitted light, and at the same time they could be seen as a type of prayer. This is a metafilm on the subject of light and darkness, as well as a response to a historical event.

    - A Child Goes Burying Dead Insects (Rei Hayama, 12min, 2009)A Child Goes Burying Dead Insects (Kodomo ga Mushi no Shigai wo Umeni Iku ) is the first film work by Rei Hayama. The repeated sequence of -one girl appears in the woods, buries dead insects and then leaves- was made without camera. With each duplicate repetition breaks the film images and fades its color. The girl in film was also performed by filmmaker herself. The film is structural but also has narrative.

    - Generator (Makino Takashi, 20min, 2012)The images reach realms beyond our comprehension as they transform and invite us into our own personal memories. Filled with uncertain yet overwhelmingly reminiscent images, the film opens up before our eyes. When the unfixed transformations of light eventually shift into aerial shots, images capable of mutual recognition, we are able to transcend ‘the body’ and ‘personal recollections’ into inter-personal memories that reach back into our ancestral imagination. We may be able to feel as living beings a part of our star for the first time if we recognize our ‘body’ as a small universe, realise our city as an enormous living body and ourselves as merely one cell.
