Eric Theise

Eric Theise (b. in Chicago, lives in San Francisco) is a maker of moving and still images. He works in 16mm, with and without a camera, and is presently at work on a born-digital series called If Maps that reimagines/reimplements artistic impulses through the tools of digital cartography.

Theise was a volunteer programmer with the Experimental Film Coalition's monthly series at Randolph Street Gallery in the late 1980s and served on the Boards of Canyon Cinema and the San Francisco Cinematheque, where he also co-authored their first monograph and contributed numerous program notes throughout the early 1990s. He's received an Interbay Cinema Society Lightpress Grant (2019), a BAVC Preservation Access Program grant (2018), and a Film Arts Foundation Fund for Independent Cinema Grant (2005), and has been in residence at Signal Culture (2018 & 2019), The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (2004), and Anchor Graphics (2002).
