das Fadas, Sílvia

Sílvia das Fadas is a filmmaker, an independent researcher, film curator, and cinephile.

She was born in Coimbra (Portugal), a circular city where she left her braids and burned her imagination between the black walls of CITAC (Círculo de Iniciação Teatral da Academia de Coimbra), an experimental theatre group. She dedicated herself to an Artistic Studies Degree (Universidade de Coimbra) and found in cinema the grace of transforming words into images. She started filming in Super8 and for two years worked at Grauco, the oldest cineclub in Rome, a city that stole her heart and saw her studying at the Scuola Romana di Fotografia. She studied Cinema and Aesthetics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and concluded the program of Cinema/Moving Image at Ar.Co, an independent visual arts school. In the same luminous city of Lisbon she committed herself to the material learning of cinema at ANIM (The Portuguese Moving Image Archive) and at Cinemateca Portuguesa. She also worked for DocLisboa Film Festival and Doc’s Kingdom Documentary Seminar. Simultaneously, she worked as an archivist and researcher at Espaço Llansol, an association dedicated to the works of Portuguese writer Maria Gabriela Llansol. Driven by a militant nostalgia, she moved to Los Angeles where she continued to craft her personal films in 16mm, at the California Institute of the Arts. Interested in curating, she initiated the Not Reconciled Film Screenings and regularly volunteers for Los Angeles Filmforum. She currently works as a Visual History Researcher for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
