  • Urban Research 2014 Open Call for Submissions

    By on

Urban Research is a special film program during the Berlin International Directors Lounge concerned with urban themes curated by Klaus W. Eisenlohr. For years the urban landscape has been under rapid change. Due to the increased economic pressure and shift towards mono-functional uses of the city, public space more and more vanishes. The newly awakened interest in old city centers, which is a rather positive development, has also created new demands in conjunction with the deregulations of national and municipal city tasks: the city has mainly become an object for real estate investment. On the other hand, new waves for urban movements towards a democratic renewal have appeared. It may be surprising that in this field of creative expression, experimental film has found a renaissance, often in conjunction with analog methods. Also a diversity of documentary forms have arisen anew. Creative film nowadays uses a multitude of traditions mixing and recombining the white-cube gallery art, classical avant-garde, classic cinema and the tube, performance and new media, happening and radical activism. Concerning creative production and critical discussions, there seems to have been an increased interest in public space and urban themes. In addition the classical “theatre screening” seems to meet a new interest. Artists working in a diversity of fields have discovered again the “single channel” format as an easy way for presentation and discussing work on international platforms without the complications and the distribution costs of extended installations.Urban Research 2014 will be first presented at the Berlin International Directors Lounge 6–16 February 2014. The program has also been presented internationally in screenings in London, Mannheim, Hannover, Poznan, Freiburg, Essen, Dordrecht, Senigallia, St. Petersburg and Berlin.

  • EFFPortland 2014 call for films, installations and performances

    By on

The Experimental Film Festival Portland is now open for submissions of films, installations and performances.

EFFPortland erupted in 2012 in the fair city of roses, in response to the need for a Portland-based experimental media showcase. It filled that void with a lava-hot amalgam of shorts, installations, performances, and collaborations. With a week of solid programming, some of which lasted for months beyond the official festival, across seven venues around the city, EFFPortland's inaugural year was, in short, a total blast. We had the immense pleasure of cultivating fantastic partnerships with some of portland’s most exciting and dynamic venues, artists, and organizations, and we made a whole bunch of new friends, colleagues, and co-conspirators hailing from the near side and the far side. And there were donuts!

The second EFFPortland is based on the framework and momentum of our first effort, maintaining the core value of connecting the rich landscape of local makers to the vast and bright world of experimental media across the country and beyond both coasts. This year, we are putting more method into our madness. We are flush with the gifts of experience and passion and suited up to continue this great experiment. We’re back in the lab, and this time we have blueprints.

  • Haverhill Experimental Film Festival 2014

    By on

The second annual Haverhill Experimental Film Festival has just opened the call for entries. For the inaugural year, we had 200 submissions from around the world and chose 45 films. Each of the five screenings had a packed house of 60 people or more, including seven filmmakers in attendance. We are expanding the Massachusetts-based festival from two to three days (now seven total screenings), including five more awards, as well as taking those winners on a festival tour down I-95 starting in Boston and ending in Raleigh. $15 entry fee plus $5 for additional entries. 40-minute max runtime. Exhibition format includes Super 8mm, 16mm, and Quicktime. We are looking for films/videos that break boundaries and tear through tradition with elegance- works of art not particularly suited for a museum or gallery, but for a screening room. Check out the new website layout, online submission form, and mobile site. Online submissions strongly encouraged.
