About BFMAF

Now in its 16th year, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is the UK's Festival for New Cinema and Artists' Moving Image.

A platform for emerging and established artists and filmmakers, the Festival is inspired by its surroundings to push boundaries and explore the unexplored.

Over 10,000 visitors joined us in September 2019 for a Festival featuring some of the most distinctive and unexpected works of new cinema being made around the world today. We welcomed audiences to the borders of England and Scotland for 4 days of screenings, exhibitions, performances and seminars.

The 2019 Berwick New Cinema Competition winner was Onyeka Igwe. Previous competition winners are Callum Hill (2018), Sky Hopinka (2017), Camilo Restrepo (2016) and Julia Feyrer & Tamara Henderson (2015).

Previous jurors at the festival include: Sebastian Buerkner (Filmmaker), Hyun Jin Cho (Curator), Beatrice Gibson (Filmmaker), Sonali Joshi (Producer and Distributer), Shama Khanna (Curator & Educator), Amal Khalaf (Curator, Serpentine Projects, London), Salomé Lamas (Filmmaker), Gail Pickering (Filmmaker), Julian Ross (Locarno Film Festival & International Film Festival Rotterdam), Joanna Rysynska (National Gallery of Art Washington), Fatoş Üstek (Director, Liverpool Biennale), Rehana Zaman (Filmmaker).

The Berwick New Cinema Competition is kindly supported by Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council.
