First my firewire IEEE 1394 capture started dropping frames, and then it died all together. I mostly use Premier Pro to capture, but I do not think it is a problem with the software configuration because windows does not respond to the camera being connected at all (+ have tried different cameras so it is not a problem with a specific camera either).
I tried replacing the firewire card with a new one, and no success, so I know the problem is not a faulty unit, + on device manager it says the hardware is connected and working properly. The problem is simply that when I connect a camera nothing happens.
Was just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems, I know some video codecs can cause conflicts with this device, but I have so many different codecs installed that I would not know where to begin in an attempt to remove them all, is there any particular codec or software I should look out for?
Has anyone ever experienced a problem such as this?
+ any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

Does it work with movie maker?
Believe or not it can be the cable it self. I've had problems with cable on a mac for a soundcard and hard drive. It turned out to be the cable. So I would investigate that. After all if windows isn't picking it up and recognising the camera.
I use Premiere 6 and sometimes once in a blue moon it forgets my camera but a restart of the software or reboot the comp does the trick.
But as you say you had dropped frames and then it dies I would check the cable as they're not indestructable.
In XP if you have system restore turned on you can roll back to a date when the computer was working alright. But this only works if you have had this function turned on in the first place.

It seems firewire is not 100% safley hot swappable if the devices are turned on even though it should be. So have you checked your camera on another machine?
Thanks for you advice, unfortunately I can not roll back windows I do not have this function enabled.
+ I have about 5 years of unbacked up work on my system (which is mad I know) but it makes me very nervous about making drastic changes inside windows configuration and very scared about letting a techy lose on my computer until I get another hard disk to back up my stuff.
The firewire cable is working as I tested it on my mac and that works, but the mac is old and slow so I can not work on that.
Anyway thanks for your suggestions, any other ideas would be welcome.
