  • The Criterion Collection: Nicole Lizée's Iconic Remixes at the FNC Lab

    By on

The Festival du nouveau cinéma is pleased to annouce its Lab performance entitled The Criterion Collection. A series of glitch-based pieces delve into the worlds of iconic films and filmmakers that have made a marked impact on the aesthetic of Canadian composer Nicole Lizée.

This performance combines extracts from her previous work, Hitchcock Études (2010), Behind the Sound of Music (2014), Kubrick Études (2013). Each work is constructed around damaged and deconstructed audio and video - chewed and warped videocassettes. The resulting errors and imperfections are woven together to create a sonic landscape over which accompanying instrumental material - itself emulating the traits of broken or malfunctioning media - is performed live.

  • AVANT 2014: Found and Excavated

    By on

The theme of the 11th edition of AVANT is Found and Excavated. Films, videos and live performances based on re-edited found footage, or films that have been going through processes of decay and destruction, film that is in constant transformation, aesthetically or politically.

Friday evening begins with a selection of films by the German collective Schmelzdahin and continues with a live performance of the film Materia Obscura, made by the film alchemist and former Schmelzdahin member Jürgen Reble and with live music by the multimedia artist Thomas Köner.

Saturday opens with four films by Matthias Müller and Christoph Girardet who have excavated new stories from well-known movies by re-editing and assembling them anew. After this follows a complete retrospective of the films by Schmelzdahin and a screening of Wolfgang Lehmann’s one hour long intense flickering journey into the fantastic world of nature documentaries. Saturday concludes with two programmes: The Spanish artist Maria Cañas’ political collages and a unique program with Soviet and Russian found footage film, curated by Masha Godovannaya.

  • Sheffield Fringe 2014

    By on

Film at the intersection of art and documentary

This year’s extended edition of Sheffield Fringe (June 6-14) considers the relationship between aesthetics and emergency politics, manifested as experimental narratives. Encountering both domestic and institutional arrangements, cultural conditioning, and national political milieux, the ethics of artistic agency and representation are brought into question as filmmakers cross-examine their chosen subjects from many angles. Improvisation may inform both subject matter and approach, with egos incisively and humorously dismantled; the specifics of a given place or circumstance may be scrutinized. The films, performances, and discussions that make up Sheffield Fringe 2014 are by turns playful and unsettling, with monologue emerging as a strategy for preservation, and dialogue as the option to move things forward into the future.
