    To accept the enigma of a film is to delight in it. Such an acquiescence is caused by the depth of a character, an actor's performance or the sharpness of the dialogues. The spectator appreciates watching elements assemble and thus seeing the puzzle being reconstituted. The pattern in the puzzle evolves (the story) and the aspect of its parts gives it character (the form).

MUFF celebrates low-budget filmmaking and promotes those who challenge the constraints and conventions of mainstream Hollywood. Co-founded by Karina Mariano and Zoë Brown, MUFF has morphed into a collective of independent filmmakers, writers, teachers and cinephiles committed to seeking out edgy films bristling with a sense of creative freedom, energy and experimentation. Films in any way affiliated with a major motion picture studio, and “calling-card” films (that is, slick, thinly disguised shout-outs to the commercial industry), are ineligible.

In this dystopian pleasure-based economy, the conventional arbiters of value convert easily into immaterial alternatives such as emotions and experiences. Love and authenticity are the currencies of our time, exchanged alternatively through restless online posting, reproductive labour and the good vibes produced by corporate mindfulness meditation sessions.

  • Atelier 105 - Post-production residency for video - First commission 2018

    The Atelier 105 artist residencies are dedicated to video-based post-production of films that fall within the realm of experimental cinema, with the objective of supporting ten to fifteen projects per year.

    Submissions are now open for the first residency session of 2018 (January 29 to June 1). The application deadline is Friday, December 15 (midnight). (However, please note that the session will be closed when the quota of 30 submissions has been reached)
