Walking the line between structure and freedom, this residency is a many headed beast: a biennially rotating film collective on assignment, a performance of place, a cultural mirror, a momentary Narnia, an interventionist, a portal, an international exchange and dialogue, and a discovery of the invisible. The Weight of Mountains residency tailors a space for filmmakers to immerse themselves into remote, overwhelmingly present, or challenging environments world wide to intervene, divert, connect, challenge and enhance their creative practice with fellow contemporaries; bringing together international artists and cross-pollinating film and media with global perspectives.

The Weight of Mountains will be based in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada from January 10 - April 4, 2018. Locations in the Yukon are some of the coldest places on earth, however Dawson being one of the wackiest. The still crisp frozen air bites your lips and then thaws between dark winter and a rejuvenating spring. What is unveiled in melting back the facade? What is taken at face value when we see landscape as character and how can we see the invisible undertones emerging? What metaphors, characters, undercurrents exist that - under authorship - confronts our world today?

Residency Details and Applications:Filmmakers will be based in Dawson City, Canada with The Weight of Mountains to create a new solo work for a festival outcome. This includes the Dawson City International Short Film Festival and further pursuit of additional festivals is encouraged. The residency is a biennial platform for contemporary film, process, and connecting innovative filmmakers to each other and their solo ideas, motivations, passions, and original work. By extracting filmmakers form their typical context, TWOM aims to give genesis to pivotal moments in their work - no producers, actors, film crews, or collaborators are permitted to join the filmmakers on location.
