The Ann Arbor Film Festival has announced a policy shift for their upcoming 2021 festival: for the first time all artists showing work in competition will be paid a screening fee for doing so.

The AAFF is the longest running festival for avant-garde and experimental film in North America, and this change should have important implications for the international film festival landscape. Ann Arbor Film Festival executive director Leslie Raymond and their board of directors should be praised for taking this bold step forward, and looked to as an example of how other festivals (particularly those larger and more well-funded) ought to engage with their artists going forward.
