Après-midi (afternoon), which was made in the French Acadiana region of Louisiana, is an impressionistic and optically altered film that contains elements of a dislocated narrative. Essentially, my aim was to investigate the cinematic potential of local or regional imagery and to elicit drama from a seemingly ordinary sequence of events. An extension of a stylistic approach that began with L'Acadie (1979) Après-midi employs similar filming and single-frame rephotography techniques.
The dissonant and densely structured sound track of Après-midi as designed to add an underlying sense of mystery and anxiety to the film's seemingly idyllic subject matter. Technically, the sound track was produced by mixing, looping and synthesizing electronically generated audio effects.
