Presented in partnership with IMMA’s exhibition ‘As Above, So Below: Portals, Visions, Spirits & Mystics’, aemi is delighted to collaborate with artist Susan MacWilliam to present ‘Out of Body’, a selection of films that explore the psychic and physical spaces of body and landscape.
AEMI and IFI present the film and video work of Peggy Ahwesh and Julie Murray. The programme examines the distinct and overlapping interests of two significant filmmakers, both of whom will be in attendance for the screening.
Over several decades of practice Peggy Ahwesh has created one of the more heterogeneous bodies of work in the pantheon of experimental cinema. From early films shot on Super8 to recent forays into digital animation, Ahwesh’s work powerfully addresses questions of feminism, cultural identity and performance.

Henry Hills has been making short, intensely rhythmic experimental films since 1975. Primarily New York-based (where he frequently collaborates with composer John Zorn, choreographer Sally Silvers, and poet Charles Bernstein), he has been living half-time in Vienna since 2008, teaches at FAMU in Prague and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2009.
This programme, curated by seminal Irish filmmaker Vivienne Dick, represents many highlights from Hills’ career, and has been similarly presented in recent months at the Austrian Film Museum, REDCAT in L.A. and Media City in Windsor, Ontario. His work, which seeks abstraction within sharply focused naturalistic imagery and the ethereal within the mundane, promotes an active attentiveness through a relentlessly concentrated montage.
The devotional cinema of American filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky is a rare treasure that allows for a distinct experience of time and meditation. His films blend a poetic and introspective view of his environments with an exploration of the different cognitive and emotional associations that can be established between one shot and the next.
Available to view only on 16mm, this programme of Dorsky’s films, curated by EFC member Esperanza Collado in collaboration with Lumiére magazine, represents a truly unique opportunity to experience this important work. The programme features three films: The Visitation, the first of Dorsky’s Devoted Songs; Winter, a seasonal portrait of New York; and Alaya, one of the filmmaker’s most radical and structural works.
