Museum of Clouds is a weekend programme of screenings and discussions exploring the films, the contexts, the figures that connected a diverse group of artist-filmmakers working over the last ten years. The series includes works by Gabriel Abrantes, Basma Alsharif, Alexander Carver, Benjamin Crotty, Mati Diop, Beatrice Gibson, Shambhavi Kaul, Laida Lertxundi, Matías Piñeiro, Ben Rivers, Ben Russell, Daniel Schmidt, Ana Vaz and Phillip Warnell, as well as conversations with the artists and with the programmers, writers and producers who have championed their work.

Beyond the Surface

From October 19th to 24th - 2015 Labor Neunzehn proudly presents the film screening programme Beyond the surface.

International artists have been invited to contribute their films to create different ways of perceiving, transforming, articulating, deconstructing the subtext that triggers the title of this series. The things of the world are not represented by our minds at any given moment, and usually their life is not accessible to us, but hidden, concealed, or withdrawn. Whether we stay, go beyond or beneath, we are moving around the surface, by a language of desire and suppression that turns the interiority inside-out and inflects the outward forms in a moltitude of facets. From the RGB screen in itself to precise political and postcolonial contexts, from war to entertainment, from dream to vision, we come across the surface. A concealing-movement that will be fulfilled optically, and with a self-published catalogue, distributed in occasion of the event.

Filmadrid 2015

Filmadrid International Film Festival (June 5-13, Madrid) is a newborn festival with the "determination to discover new paths in the landscape of contemporary cinematography". And as such, in its very first edition, presents a very strong commitment with experimental cinema. Eighteen works, feature and short films, will participate in the avant-garde competition, including pieces by Basma Alsharif, Laida Lertxundi, Juan Daniel F. Molero, Pablo Marín and Aura Satz, among others. Four 'guest programmes' complement the avant-garde section, featuring a series of animated non-fiction shorts curated by Elena Duque ('The missing image'); a programme curated by Albert Alcoz & Alberto Cabrera Bernal, filmmakers and editors of the Angular DVD label, who will also present its first release; a session dedicated to veteran filmmaker Adolpho Arrietta; and a series of works on the poems of Galician poet Xosé María Díaz Castro titled 'Proxecto Nimbos'. The Vanguardias Live section challenges several artists to create performative works in ways that they haven't thought of/worked with before; this edition will include performances by Juan Barrero, Lois Patiño and Salomé Lamas.

Courtisane Festival 2015

Just two days more until the beginning of the 2015 Courtisane Festival (April 1-5, Ghent, Belgium). Now in its fourteenth year, the festival keeps a solid programme as ever with their 'Artists in focus' section, dedicated to Thom Andersen and Pedro Costa. Each filmmaker will be the protagonist of a series of different events including screenings of their work, masterclasses and carte blanches.

The festival will also present a selection of over 50 films from the L.A. Rebellion movement, including works by Charles Burnett, Haile Gerima, Larry Clark and Billy Woodberry. The Selection strand will feature films and videos by Basma Alsharif, Mary Helena Clark, Beatrice Gibson, Ernie Gehr, Morgan Fisher, Ute Aurand and Luke Fowler, among many others.

Basma Alsharif: Doppelgänging

Basma Alsharif’s sharp, seductive films have often been informed by Palestine’s history, its contemporary political situation, and the conflicted experiences of those who call it home (whether or not they live there). She returns to CATE with a collection of recent films that explore bilocation—the act of being in multiple places at once—a state of being she uses to describe Palestinian identity, as well as cinema itself. The program offers the possibility of bilocating through the visceral experience of drone-glitched TV and teenage cello lessons in Home Movies Gaza (2013); a rhyming exercise in the Panathenaic Stadium in Girls Only (2014); a stroboscopic oral history in Farther Than the Eye Can See (2012); and a hypnosis-inducing pan-geographic shuttle in Deep Sleep (2014), a film/performance. Presented in collaboration with the Video Data Bank.
