In the fourteenth edition of S8 Mostra de Cinema Periférico, which will be held from May 26 to June 4, more than 180 pieces from a dozen countries will be screened. One of the main figures in the new edition will be Anthony McCall, known worldwide for his “solid light” works, a series that he began in the 1970s with his famous Line Describing a Cone. The British artist will be the protagonist of a focus in which his collective films Argument and Sigmund Freud's Dora will be screened.

Microscope is very pleased to present Anthony McCall’s groundbreaking piece “Light Describing a Cone” (1973) as part of its series of imageless film performances and other works in connection and collaboration with the current series “Imageless Films” at Anthology Film Archives.
The London Film-Makers' Co-operative (LFMC) was founded in October 1966, and soon grew from its beginnings as a film-viewing group to become one of the major centres of a worldwide network of avant-garde film culture. In contrast to similar co-operative endeavours, the LFMC's activity was not limited to distribution – within a few years it was also running a regular program in its own cinema and, most notably, it democratized the means of production by establishing a film workshop that enabled filmmakers to control every stage of the creative process.

Part of a series of works collectively referred to as solid light films, Anthony McCall’s Line Describing a Cone sees the fog-thickened beam of a 16mm projector transformed into a three-dimensional moving sculpture. As the beam is viewed from various vantage points within the space it transforms, shifts, and demands attentive observation.

During the 42nd Film Fest Gent, Art Cinema OFFoff collaborates with Vooruit and Film Fest Gent and brings a night focused on (British) Expanded Cinema. The visitors will be dazzled by multiple projections on one screen and become the protagonists. Expect both iconic and (yet) unknown performances from the (British) underground.
Charting the development of the studio practice of New York based artist Anthony McCall (b.1946), this publication features facsimile reproductions of pages from McCall's extensive archive of notebooks, which are supported by production scores and installation photographs. It was formed out of a series of discussions that took place over the last decade between McCall and the artists Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone.
The diversity of thought with cinema. Thus the text as an image, the relations between image and sound, are part of personal films with an autobiographical dimension. Themes such as the contemporary consumer society, advertising, representation of women and neocolonialism are the focus of several sessions. While others show the film in a situation where celluloid and video speak their differences through the film as sculpture. The issue of the media, placing film and video in different sites, ranging from theater to the gallery, will also be addressed in the sessions. The films will be screened with subtitles in Portuguese and those will be available for filmmakers, and / or distributors.
