The launch of Sight/Geist, the new screening series selected from an open call for NYC-based film/video artists, will occur over three thematic group screenings/discussions at The 8th Floor, 17 W 17th St NYC, free and open to all. Artists include: Simone Barros, Cassandra Celestin, Lananh Chu, Steven Cottingham, Sarah Friedland, Haisi Hu, Erin Johnson, Anne Sofie Noerskov, Georgica Pettus, Jolie Ruelle, Jess Shane & Katie Mathews, Ciaran Short, Lauryn Welch & Eloise Sherrid, and Yu Yan.
During two nights in April, 19th and 20th – Filmform will present the legacy of Swedish experimental film & video art at Image Forum, Tokyo (2 Chome-10-2 Shibuya). The two separate screenings will be introduced by Filmform's Andreas Bertman and followed by a talk together with the writer Martin Grennberger.
In her immersive video installation, Just to Be Close to You, artist Laneya Billingsley, aka Billie Ocean, employs the virtual space of the video screen as a field of pure fantasy and feeling, where she wrestles with personal and inherited social conflicts, taking a deep dive down the rabbit hole of the mind, conjuring complex feelings, and communing with imagos of her ancestors. The 69th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is presenting five shows of works by filmmakers and artists from different generations and countries who work with the short form in very different ways. They come from the arts, experimental or documentary film, their themes are personal, political or historical, they use performances, collages, text or feature film elements, demonstrating the enormous range and versatility of the short form.
When image and language are paired together, written and spoken words can reposition the image’s hierarchical role and create an opportunity for a new point of view. In this program, Korean female filmmakers use text itself as a material—either directly burned into the film or inserted as voice over—to push cinema towards a radical location or realm, engaging with an expansive legacy of colonial power dynamics.
The practice of recycling cinematographic images is almost as old as cinema itself. While it has frequently had a utilitarian, documentary or ideological function, it is also intimately tied to the history of avant-garde cinema since at least the 1930s. While many found footage films and artists associated with the practice are relatively well known, less is known about the nature and provenance of the images that are found and repurposed.
