When Michael Snow passed away on January 5 at the age of 94, the world lost a tremendous artist, who worked with rigor and humor in film, music, photography, sculpture, and more.
His classic film Wavelength hasn’t played in Los Angeles for several years, so we are bringing it with two other short films, Standard Time (1967) and See You Later (1990) all screening on 16mm.

Spanish-Venezuelan Elena Duque is a programmer, film critic, teacher and filmmaker. As a filmmaker, her work revolves around animation and collage, incorporating analog formats and ways of making films that revisit themes such as identity and sense of belonging through plastic exercises on places, objects and textures.
Monographic session devoted to the French filmmaker Jean-Michel Bouhours, the creator of animation films full of movement and colour, centring on his works most closely linked with painting. The screening will be followed by a conversation between the filmmaker and the animator and programmer Elena Duque.
Expanded cinema group Optipus presents a live multiple projection composition, using films, video, slides, liquid light & magic lanterns, plus live electronic sound, field recordings, samples, foley & shadowplay ~ on a theme of the visual fruiting body, the mycelium underground & the magic of mushrooms, evoking death, decay & regeneration, along with the biomorphic ecology of transformation & the body.
World Cinema Carnival is fostering a vibrant and diverse community of filmmakers, producers, animators, video artists and researchers who experiment and counter the medium and language of cinema. Our thinking of curation performs beyond all subjugation and inhibitions while constantly experimenting with contextual and conceptual forms and definitions.
