  • Movie Assembly: an online filmmaking project

    Movie AssemblyMovie Assembly is a "collaborative internet film making media project" impulsed by Gokhan Okur. Its objective is to build short films using images stored on Flickr. "Flickr has millions of photos tagged by users and if you place proper images one after another you can build a video." There are some demo videos of the concept at the site. You can find more information here.

  • Support Light Cone

    Light Cone, the french film cooperative that will (hopefully) celebrate this year its 25th anniversary, has been suffering lately from serious economical and identity problems. Its survival is menaced because, among other things, the lack of funding from public institutions. You can read more about this at their site.

    There's an online peititon for support. Sign it and help this milestone institution. It's free and won't take you more than a couple of minutes of your time. Or if you can, make a donation.

  • Ken Jacobs podcast at Zoom-In

    Ken JacobsThe magazine Zoom In online has posted an interesting podcast with Ken Jacobs, recorded at the Tribeca Film Festival. Jacobs talks extensively about his work Ontic Antics Starring Laurel and Hardy: Bye, Molly, its creation process and the motivators of the film.

  • Helen Hill 1970-2007

    Helen HillHelen Hill, filmmaker, was killed at her home in New Orleans last January 4th. An unidentified intruder invaded the familiiar home and shot Helen fatally in the neck and wounded her husband Paul Gailiunas.

    Hill was an experimental animator; her shorts have been shown in numerous festivals across North America. She recently received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation for her film The Florestine collection. She is also know for her book Recipes for disaster, a compilation of "recipes" on how to chemically treat film.

    A Helen Hill memorial website has been set up.

  • Scott MacDonald presents award to William Greaves

    William GreavesOn November 16th, Scott MacDonald (A critical cinema) presented the Leo Award for lifetime achievement in documentary filmmaking to William Greaves, for showing "a sustained ability to introduce innovative approaches into the media arts field". The event was held at the Lincoln Center, New York

    William Greaves is a leading documentary filmmaker that has been working on the field for more than 50 years. He's a multi-facteted artist that has worked as producer, director, editor, cameraman, actor, dancer, drama teacher and song writer. Publisher Criterion has recently released his films Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One and Take 2 1/2.

    Cinemascope has published an interesting interview by Michael Sicinski to Scott MacDonald, author of seminal books such as Avant-Garde Film: Motion Studies, The garden in the machine and the essential series A Critical Cinema: Interviews with Independent Filmmakers, which has reached this year its fifth volume.

  • Jean-Marie Straub desató la polémica en Venecia

    Straub y HuilletEn el pasado festival de Venecia, que finalizó el día 9, Jean-Marie Straub y Danièlle Huillet presentaban su nuevo film Quei loro incontri (2006), secuela de Dalla nube alla resistenza (1979), y como la anterior, basada en una obra de Cesare Pavese, los Dialoghi con Leucò. El jurado de este año, dirigido por la actriz Catherine Deneuve, decidió conceder a la pareja de cineastas un León Rugiente "por la invención de lenguaje cinemático en el conjunto de su carrera". Los Straub, sin embargo, no acudieron a la presentación del film ni a la ceremonia: Huillet se encontraba enferma y Straub envió varios mensajes a través de los actores.

  • JonasMekas com: Rythmus 21 de Richter

    Tal y como anunciábamos, Jonas Mekas ha comenzado a publicar en su web vídeos de obras clásicas experimentales. Los vídeos son en formato mp4 (compatible Ipod) y cuentan con una introducción del propio Mekas. El primero en tener el honor es Rythmus 21 (1921) de Hans Richter.
